Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
I did a quick search and I didn't see any recent discussions on this topic. I'm asking for your advice.
It seems as though the arrival of the GN is finally approaching, and now I need to make a critical decision. Where should I buy - Verizon or Best Buy or somewhere else? My GN won't be sporting a case (maybe a screen protector), so I'll be getting an insurance plan. I'm interested in opinions and experiences utilizing your protection plan. I know Best Buy charges a bit more per month, but is it worth it? Does one plan offer more coverage than the other?
Thanks in advance!

BestBuy has the better insurance plan. You don't have to pay a deductible or wait for anyone to send you a phone. You can go right into the store and get a replacement on the spot.

You might want to take a look at squaretrade.com. They also have a 30% off coupon code offered. Typically much less than VZW.

Great info everyone, thanks! I'm leaning towards BB because I've heard good things about their 'black tie' protection in the past. Although, some of the rumors would lead us to believe BB isn't getting the GN until the 11th. Plus, the big red corporate store in my town closed recently. It converted to a big red reseller, not sure how they operate with regard to insurance plans. <shrug>

Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
From what I read, only iPhones are higher.
There is insurance protection and total equipment protection, which extends the warranty and also covers lost accessories. The insurance is about $6 a month and total equipment coverage is around $10. Last I heard, insurance co-pays were $99.
I am going to check my statement now that there's all this debate on this issue just to be sure. - 12-03-2011, 09:15 AM #12

Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
Verizon which is actully Asurion, is 6.99 a month and 89 for the deductible, iphones are 10.99 and 159 for dedcutible.
Ill be going with Protectcell because its $70 for the year and, $70 for the deductible, new phone no questions asked.
Asurion likes to do Refurbs, - 12-03-2011, 09:44 AM #15

Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
I'll have to get some more info, but I've learned that Verizon's insurance is $6.99 a month with a $99 deductable. It covers everything, but I still need to find out if you get a new phone or only a refurbished one. Now for BB, I would stay far away. I've been reading many, many bad things about their service and people are calling it a scam because of how displeased they are with it.

Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
I used to work at BB. The black tie is good and you have the option to always renew when black tie is about to expire. With vz they always send refurbished phones atleast when I've asked that's what they said they said if I didn't want a refurbished then I would need to upgrade..

Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
Squaretrade trade people! End of conversation.
Their accidental loss or damage protection beats all. Their prices start off with 2 year coverage, so remember to do the math. - 12-03-2011, 11:26 AM #22
Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
No no no no! Do not get best buy. They will repair your phone instead of replacing it, this took 3 weeks for me. You have to pay if you want a loaner phone and it won't be a smartphone. They do not cover loss or theft. I canceled my insurance with them for my dinc and will never go back. Total rip off.
I would rather have asurion, the company vzw uses, because they'll replace it no matter what and worse case scenario you'll be without a phone over a weekend. You will get a refurb though, and it might not be the same phone. They are kind of expensive though, with the deductible, so I've been trying to find another option, squaretrade seems legit.Last edited by goldkear; 12-03-2011 at 11:31 AM.

Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
Okay okay, now I'm second guessing getting insurance from big red or BB. About these e-commerce insurance sites (Squaretrade & Protectcell), have you ever filed a replacement claim with them? I just wonder about turn-around time with a web-based insurance option versus a brick and mortar store?

Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
I tried squaretrade with my Nexus One, and I won't be getting a squaretrade warranty for my phone ever again. The problem I had with them was I dropped my phone in the snow, and the earpiece speaker no longer worked, and at the time I was using the phone part of my phone regularly...
Squaretrade provides dollar amounts of coverage for whatever you bought the plan for, and in this case, they arranged for me to send my phone back to HTC for repairs, quoted the cost of repairs (~$250). I was "insured" for up to $600 but after this repair, I would only have $350 dollars left of the dollar coverage. Furthermore, once the dollar amount has been met, the contract is considered fulfilled. So you might be buying the 2 year coverage, but its 2 years OR $600 (in this case) of repairs or replacement costs.
After really looking into Asurion and how reliant I am on my phone, the VZW TEC option was a much better option simply because i'll always know I have a replacement phone within a couple days of filing a claim, and aside from more than two claims per calendar year, there wont be any surprise charges for buying a new insurance plan when the previous coverage runs out - 12-03-2011, 12:21 PM #25
Re: Insurance/Protection - Verizon vs Best Buy
Not for my Nexus S. They wouldn't replace it on the spot a few months ago, they had to send it back and I was shipped a refurbished phone, not my own phone repaired. Good thing I back up frequently. I was without my Nexus S for about 5 days.BestBuy has the better insurance plan. You don't have to pay a deductible or wait for anyone to send you a phone.
