Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
Really looking forward to using the GNex as a hotspot....without paying any extra fees to VZW.
What are my options?
Will WiFi work without a subscription? (There was a simple sql hack for the bionic that accomplished this.)
Can I use the included micro USB cord to do it?
Thanks! - 12-14-2011, 06:13 PM #2

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
Hey,
I was wondering the same thing. I will be a first-time android user when I pick up the Nexus and was also really hoping for some form of free tethering, or at least a one time fee instead of monthly fees. I was under the impression that rooting or certain apps can get around the vzw fee.
Any help would be great.

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
It doesn't look like it's free. I know I can do it on the GSM model but doubt it on Verizon. I'm wondering how they managed to stop it. They must have something else baked into the OS. Every nexus phone I've had you could do it for free, even though the carrier charged for it.

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
Well it will be free one way or the other. I am sure some members will come on here saying "that's against your agreement, Verizon is gonna get you" I say screw Verizon, root it and tether away.

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
I'm coming from a blackberry and I use the 'tether' app by tether.com. Its a one-time fee of $50 but every few months crackberry would have it for 50% off. They also have an android version, has anyone seen this discounted?

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
For the record, wired tethering is business as usual... right? PDANet, good to go?

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
here's how you do tethering:
1. root
2. search wifi tether on google
3. click the first link (should be a code.google.com link)
4. install it
5. ????
6. profit
Also, if you don't care about wifi or don't want to root, just grab PDAnet from junefabrics

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
The only thing I've noticed about PDANet is that anytime I use the Bluetooth DUN it literally fries my Charge - battery burns up, phone slows to a crawl and takes that internet connection I was looking for along with it. Does anybody else have this problem or is it just me?

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
The only limitation with the tether app is that it only does one device. You can do wireless via bluetooth, but you cant act as a hotspot.

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
Wireless tether for root users and Barnacle are both currently not working on my rooted VZW Nexus.
Anyone gotten one to work? - 12-15-2011, 03:24 PM #21

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
Can someone with a GN try to access the EPST menu? Go to the dialer and type in ##778 and click "dial." Choose EDIT, then enter password 000000. If it works, don't do anything, just back out.
If so, you can use the oldest trick in the book.Last edited by Revolutionary; 12-15-2011 at 03:36 PM. Reason: Confused -- original said testing menu

Re: Options for free GN hotspot / tether?
Or, you can read the other thread specifically about this app that confirms Verizon can and will start charging you for tethering since it doesn't route data the same way PDANet does. You can also stop spamming the forums by advertising your product in any topic that remotely mentions "tethering", while you're at it.
