rollyfingaz, as I understand it, the NFC chip installed in your galaxy nexus is embedded within the phone. I came across this post searching for a similar answer after speaking to a Samsung representative regarding my Samsung galaxy s ii skyrocket. The answer I received was that the NFC chip is embedded in the phone and no special battery is required to power it.
I would add, though, that when I asked if the NFC functionality would work with a third party battery, the Samsung rep did not know the answer.

Then why would the Samsung batteries have NFC stuff written on it? I thought the phone has the embedded chip for storing and securing your information or something on it and that the battery actually had the sensor or transmitter on it for touching it to the paypass terminal. I really haven't read anything about it I just thought that was how it worked.

The nfc chip is embedded in the phone

But the nfc antenna is in the battery

Without the antenna, nfc wont function properly

So for now you only have two choices

The stock battery or the extended battery sold by verizon
