my gnex took a fall!
Well as the thread title suggests my naked gnex took its first big fall today. Im 6'4 and I was holding it in front of my face when I turned quickly, hit my elbow on the car door, and fumbled the Gnex. My Nexus then proceeded to fall nearly straight down landing directly on the bottom left corner and then sliding a few feet down my driveway. It hit HARD!!!
It has a mark where it hit and a miniscule, hairline crack. It also got an almost undetectable scratch on the screen right above the speaker. Im nearly sick. But for as hard as it hit and from the height it fell Im fairly impressed it is not in peices. It took the fall about as well as my old droid would have. Needless to say I ordered a case for mine and my wifes and had them overnighted so I can get them on tomorrow. I do not need to find out if this thing can handle any more falls and unfortunately when I look at my phone anymore the only thing I can see is the mark on the corner......so Ill protect it and hide the mark with a case.Last edited by jafels; 12-22-2011 at 12:24 PM.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
Unfortunately I cannot remember where I read this, but I know I read at least one person say they used a medium-sized case (not a thick, defender style case) and GW worked fine. It was either the Google Wallet thread here or on XDA forums. Can't remember.
Like you, I just ordered a case last night from Amazon. I haven't used a case on a phone since the first week I used one on my OG Droid. I took it off about a week after using it because of how bulky it made the phone, and I saw no reason for it because of how sturdy it was.
Considering I paid full retail for this phone off contract and it's not built out of metal like the OG D1, I'm going to search for a thin level of protection just to protect it against cosmetic damage and small falls/handling snafus.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
The little crack is on the plastic right beside the screen. Im going to cover it all up with a case and move on. Like Brandon above I never used a case with my OG droid except for the first week or so I had it. Mine was all beat up by the time it retired last week, but it still was kicking. That poor droid got dropped and beat on so much and took it all. This phone I would rather not see if it can handle the same type of abuse.....so I believe the better part of valor is to succumb to a case.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
Im using the Silicone case that Verizon sells in Blue and Black. Really impressed by this case since i only paid 13$ for it. I also have had no issues with NFC. Works with the extended and standard batteries and adds little bulk to the phone.
The case also makes the phone easier to grip and comes up above the glass screen a bit so the phone can be placed screen down and the glass won't touch the surface.
Not sure how the case will take a serious fall, but i hope i never have to find out either. - 12-22-2011, 07:41 AM

Re: my gnex took a fall!
Good to hear the cases are not affecting the NFC as wallett is my new obsession. I use it for everything now and go out of my way to avoid non pay pass retailers........anyway. I ordered the diztronic tpu case. If I dont like that I am going to try the rocket fish, the incipio, seidio, body glove.....until I find one I like. Its funny how quickly my mind has gone from not wanting a case at all to wishing I had one on my phone immediately.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
Same thing here. I didn't use cases on my previous smartphones. I did however, keep them in a sleeve when I wasn't using them but with nothing on whenever actually using them. I was planning on doing the same with this one but I was just too paranoid about dropping it every time I picked it up so I bought the Verizon silicone case AND bought the Mobi Products Clip Pouch from the AC store for when I'm not using it. It easily slides into the mobi pouch even with the case on. Two layers of protection, though still no screen protector and not planning on getting one at this point.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
Ugh I hate these stories! I so want to use my Nexus without a case but I just can't bring myself to do it. The Nexus is the first phone I've purchased with the $6.99/month insurance because I plan on keeping this thing for at least a year. I still just can't go "naked", as pretty at the Nexus is!
And yes, Wallet works fine with a thinner case on. I have the hard/flexible plastic one from Verizon and it works well while keeping the phone thin. - 12-22-2011, 12:22 PM

Re: my gnex took a fall!
I dropped mine too. It fell from my bed onto a hardwood floor. It landed on the side with the volume control, and jammed the volume button in the volume up direction. i had to spend about 30 min playing with it to unjam it. It has two scratches where it landed. The build quality on this phone is not nearly as good as my X or OG droid. If i dropped either one of them, they would have dented the floor, but not this phone.
Time to order a case. - 12-22-2011, 12:37 PM #18
Re: my gnex took a fall!
I have the Otterbox Defender and I have troubles with Google Wallet while it's still in the Defender case. The NFC and the reader are trying to communicate, but I haven't been able to get it to complete a transaction while still in the case (I have been successful without the case).

Re: my gnex took a fall!
My og droid took some falls similar to what my Nexus took today and it got dented and scratched too....of course it did not crack....but mine hit close to the thin plastic by the screen so that is why it cracked. That being said....this phone is nowhere near the tank that the OG droid was. I thought I could go naked but that is not an option anymore......Ill learn to live with a case so my Nexus will make it to my next upgrade.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
You have 30 days from purchase to add phone insurance. Add it.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
Yeah I think you are the guy I had read about having issues with the bigger cases and NFC. That is why I asked about the smaller cases. I use wallet as my main walking around money source and need it to work (I dont want to go back to my real wallet). And with my wife having a gnex also it is easier for me to share stuff with her using beam. It seems most of the users of the smaller cases have had no trouble with NFC so that is encouraging.

Re: my gnex took a fall!
I dropped mine on the fifth day I had it. It was charging on my counter, standing next to it I turned and caught the cord with my shirt tail. BAM! Like I threw it. I see it bounce across the lenolium. In a fit of cursing I only found a scuff on one corner. A nick between the power button and the screen. Having landed screen down I only found one scratch next to the speaker so small it looks like a speck of dust.
Even though it has battle scars I'm still going naked. I carry it in a micro fiber bag for screen protection. - 12-22-2011, 12:56 PM #23

Re: my gnex took a fall!
I have insurance....its a small scuff and a little crack though. I realize the need to put a case on it now so those will be covered and the phone is no worse for the wear really.... so I dont feel like paying the deductible or whatever. Of course if it gets worse and the crack grows then i will use the insurance. It just sucks that my pretty phone now has some ugly to it and I have to cover it all up just to preserve it.
