I have a USB input connector on my 2011 Honda Accord. I can play and control my iPhone with the factory's stereo. When I plug my GNex into the USB input, the car stereo displays "not supported". I tried using both MTP and PTP connection types on the GNex and neither one works.

Does anyone have any idea how to make this work?

No, I've only tried my iPhone. I don't have any other android devices i can try right now, but I think I'll try my daughters droid2 tonight.

I had that with my sony radio.
USB only worked with iproducts and thumbdrives.
All other devices even my incredible had to be either via BT, FM transmitter or aux in.

No, I don't think it's just for iPhone, my Chevy Equinox of course reads my work phone... which happens to be an iPhone 4 but it also would read my Bionic, albeit a bit slower to register. However whenever I plug my GN in it does nothing! :'(

You can thank Google for this. Their wonderful idea to not include an SD card in the Galaxy Nexus is why you can no longer play your music over USB in your car. A vast majority of car stereos (both factory and third party) do not support MTP. The total number that do is probably in the single digits. Because the Nexus has no SD card, it cannot do mass storage mode which your vehicle requires.

The jury is still out on whether ROM developers could ever work some magic that would recreate a separate partition that would act as an SD card and allow mass storage mode. But it's not looking good.

I'm quite disappointed in this myself, as someone who got a new car stereo for Christmas. Bah...

Once Google enables mass storage mode in ICS, it should be able to read your music, its not a lack of sd card issue, its an os issue.
