I tried to use it at a gas station in Greenfield, Indiana on my way to Ohio for Christmas last week and the guy said that they disabled PayPass on their card readers because they had issues with that happening where people would just walk by and it would charge them.

I didn't quite understand that though, I mean if there is no sale at the time how would it still try to charge you? Unless he meant when he was ringing other people up and someone with PayPass or Google Wallet walked by then they were charged.

Whatever it did, wallet was looped in to sending mode. Wouldn't stop, had to reboot my phone in the car.

I have used wallet about 6-8 times so far and it has worked flawlessly everytime. This is the first I have heard about anyplace disabling PayPass on their card readers...my Wallet doesn't activate and send information until I actually touch it against the card reader. Lol, I would be pissed if it did a drive by purchase.

I have used it twice now with no issues. One time using 1x on extended network.

It's worked fine for me...especially considering this is leaked software not designed for the Galaxy Nexus. Beggars can't be choosers.

I use google wallet almost EVERY DAY. It has never had any malfunctions. I love to use it, as it is extremely convenient and very fast, especially at places like McDonalds.

I wish I just had a chance to actually use it. I'm sure it works, I just haven't actually used it yet because of the stupid gas station in Indiana. Everytime I go through that state there is something that makes me hate it more and more.

Does Google Wallet actually require a data connection at the time of purchase? I'm pretty sure I used it at a Meijer store. Every Meijer I have been to has horrible, horrible data signals in the store, and if I remember correctly, I had no data at all when I was checking out, but managed to use Google Wallet just fine.

I'm pretty sure it just runs your credit card number sent from Wallet just the same as any other credit card -- through the phone/data lines of the store, not your phone. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

    .
i don't believe that's technically possible, or in the wild scenario where it is possible it is highly unlikely. nfc has a maximum range of 0.2 meters, which is a little less than 8 inches (~7.8"). assuming the nfc reader is at eye level, the person would have to be holding the phone at eye level and be no more than 8 inches from the surface of the pump at the exact time that a transaction is ready to be processed.

now understanding that to this point the only phone in the US capable of nfc transactions was the nexus s, it would mean that >1 person ("people" in the testimony from the "guy" at the gas station in Greenfield, Indiana) would need to have:

    1) owned a phone that did not sell well
    2) owned a phone that did not sell well and have enabled google wallet on said phone
    3) owned a phone that did not sell well, have activated google wallet on their sales dog phone and visited the aforementioned gas station in Greenfield, Indiana
    4) owned a phone that did not sell well, have activated google wallet on their sales dog phone, visited the gas station in Greenfield, Indiana and would have had to be talking on said phone at the time AND they were at the pump no more than 7.8" from the paypass reader
    5) owned a phone that did not sell well, have activated google wallet on their sales dog phone, visited the gas station in Greenfield, Indiana and would have had to be talking on said phone at the time AND they were at the pump no more than 7.8" from the paypass reader plus doing so at the exact time that the paypass was ready to process a payment

now i ask you, which is more likely, all of the above or the simple possibility that the damn thing was broken/never enabled?

So what you experienced was a faulty pay pass terminal. I have encountered the exact same situation. The scheetz closest to me has an intermittently working pay pass system. It will occasionally work after a small delay. Usually it says sent then shows an error. And sometimes it will just keep trying to send....it eventually stops. It is not a google walldt fail as the app worked exactly as it was intended. It tried to make a transaction and when it could not your money remained safe. I use google wallet almost exclusively throughout my daily running around. I goes days, sometimes a whole week without using my real wallet......i probably hqve close to one hundred...... transactions .....the app works flawlessly every time.....some of the terminals not so much. Get the paypass locator app and you can send a report to pay pass telling them that stores paypassbsystem does not function.

Well, actually, they work with other credit cards as well. The same places around here that work with Google Wallet work with my Amex card. But, I have to get the card within like 1" for it to work. So, I agree with you, didn't happen.

You must have a data connection and what I've found is, you have to wait for the "blue arrows" on the credit card machine to show up before attempting to pay with NFC. If you try and transmit before, I always have errors.

HA. That guy must have been sniffing too much gasoline fumes. We have PayPass enabled Verifone readers where I work. You have to literally be on top of them for them to work. If you don't 'tap' your card, it will not work. In order for me to get it to read Wallet I had to also tap it. Part of the security features of it is that cards have to be right there for it to work. It will also not read if it detects more than one enabled card on the reader at the same time.

They were probably just too cheap to pay for the software. (and its extremely expensive. Something on the order of several hundred thousand dollars, and that was for a license for less than 500 stores)

On top of all that, you have to be IN the wallet for it to work. so you would consciously need to enter the PIN and have it close to the reader for it to work.

yep i have nfc in my chase visa card as well. but i made the basic assumption that people aren't carrying their credit cards around with them at eye level, so it had to be a phone

With the nfc cards, are you prompted to enter a pin after the first tap? Then have to tap it again for the actual charge to process as it is on the google wallet? As mentioned by someone it would take quite a bit of sequences for it to accidentally charge on your google wallet. I've used it about 30 times so far and have experimented different things. For example if I wake my phone up and tap the reader it will not work if if the phone is locked. So I have to wake the phone up, unlock it, first tap, enter my pin and then second tap for charge to go through. Then I click the lock symbol on the top right corner to lock the wallet immediately as opposed to waiting for the 1 minute it will take to lock automatically.

It used to work fine for me. I made about 8 purchases. McDonalds, 7-11, soda machine, you know the usual. Then one day my screen had frozen for a couple hours. I didn't know what happened, so I did a factory reset. Then when I put Google Wallet back on my GNex when I tried to add the pre-paid card back on it said "Error loading card". I should have waited a few more hours for my screen to come back on.

For what it's worth, I was having an issue with Google Wallet killing my data connection. Yesterday, I tried using it for the first time and it didn't work. The guy just said it's not picking it up. Could have been the machine for all I know. I then noticed I had no data connection in an area where I definitely should. I was getting the 'gray 1-bar 3g' sign vs blue bars, which I believe means there is a signal but no data being passed. So I connected to an open hotspot (this was at a Peet's coffee shop) and got the "gray wifi", same thing, connected but no data being passed. This is similar to what happened when Verizon was having 4g issues after Christmas. Pretty frustrating.

My point is that by removing GW and reinstalling, I believe my phone is working correctly again. Will have to use GW to pay to know for sure.

i used it at best buy on while im on vacation. Worked like a champ! Going to add money to it and use it as a pre-paid for random small purchases I would normally use cash for.

I've considered doing this same thing. It would act as a set spending allowance for myself so that I don't go overboard. The problem is there are only a few places in my area that have paypass, so my usage would still be split with my debit card.

How can you be sure that it is Google Wallet killing your data and not something else?

I've used Google Wallet a lot and haven't seen that happen.
