WiFi Tether on VZW GN - What Did I Just Stumble Upon?

Glad to see this is still working for all. When I made the OP I really wasn't sure how this would all turn out. I recently used the feature on a trip to the SouthWest last week .... Turned the hotspot on via Switch Pro Widget and tethered our original iPad at 4G speeds for the duration of the week. Worked like a charm.

No issues with VZW billing to date ... Hope it stays working for everybody! :D:D

It no longer works for me :(
It usually has an icon on the notification bar, but not today... So, I went into Settings > More... > Tethering & portable hotspot, the "Portable WiFi hotspot" is checked, but with a gray sub-text of "Error"
Anyone else? Did Verizon fix the hole?

Uncheck it.

It works fine for me, BTW.

I'm seeing this exact same behavior (starting today), and I get the same error regardless of which widget/app that I use to toggle the tethering. I've tried four different toggle widgets.

Also, I've seen a few reviewer comments on some of those market apps saying that it stopped working for them today as well, so I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this problem. I just haven't been able to find a solution yet. I've tried rebooting my phone, removing/re-adding the widget(s), uninstalling/reinstalling the apps, all with the same result.

Anyone have a solution?

Earlier today mine wouldn't turn on either. I enabled it and it would show that it turned on in the status bar, but as soon as the notification went away, the icon would as well. It eventually corrected itself.

During the 4G outage today, I noticed that the status indicated I was connected to EVDO RevA:8 instead of eHRPD:13 like usual. I keep mine forced in 3G all of the time for the battery life (2+ days of standby with Auto-sync turned off and minimal use) and only switch to 4G occasionally.

Anyway, as I understand it, you only see EVDO show up under status if they have forced you over manually during an outage, and I also noticed the issue with tethering which caused me to instantly suspect it as the culprit. Low and behold, when I switched to 4G, it connected just fine; then, switched back and verified that it was still occurring, and most interestingly noticed that 3G was still grabbing EVDO rather than eHRPD. Toggled it again - same deal; then Airplane-mode - ditto. Had to power-cycle before it grabbed eHRPD again and now tethering is back up and fine in both 3G/4G.

Hope this helps. Maybe the Devs can take a look and see if something can be done, but this will mean that during outages when we're forced to 3G-EVDO, tethering will NOT work...

THIS! THIS THIS THIS!

THANK YOU! This problem was driving me MAD yesterday. I thought for sure verizon patched it and I was going to be very upset. The reboot does indeed work.

I use FoxFi, not the OP's app, bu same deal, you cant make a hotspot on EVDO.

THANK YOU!

So if I get this, I can tether without being charged for data usage?
under settings>data usage it shows "tethering and hotspot" with data usage.
I currently have the 4gb data plan, so I don't want to pay out.

Just to be clear, you're still using your plan's allotted data (4GB, in this case) when you tether. What this is allowing you to avoid is the additional fee associated with enabling tethering through your carrier. You still have to pay the same for your regular data plan, but you'll be using up your 4GB a lot faster (on a laptop and/or sharing with others) than you would otherwise.

Just started using this last week. Works perfectly. My only question is about the data usage in the settings. when I click on the data usage icon it shows that is using data via tethering and a mobile hotspot. Is this the red flag?
