Default Ok, Lets Get to the Root of the Mic Cutout Problem

Okay, so you are chit chatting on the phone with your girl/boyfriend, getting into a very heated and erotic phone convo when SUDDENLY (s)he cant here you anymore.

WTF!?!?!? Talk about a mood killer.

There have been COUNTLESS posts about this problem, but no one can seem to put their finger on the common ground between those having issues. Could it be a hardware problem? Possibly. I would venture to say not likely, because if it were hardware then more than likely everyone would be having this problem, but it is a possibility. the Newest update (4.0.4) seems to not fix the issue, which probably means that Samsung/Google/Verizon have no idea about the issue or they don't know how to fix it.

So lets try to get some data together here for comparisons. If you have ever experienced this issue, take some time and fill out a post here with as much of this information as you possibly can. Maybe we will start seeing some similarities that could ultimately help push a fix out quicker.

I will be recording all info added here for comparison. If there is some info that you do not feel comfortable sharing with the entire forum I encourage you to PM me with it instead of holding out completely, but ultimately the choice is yours on what you share and what you dont.

Please keep this thread on topic as much as possible.

Apparently the mic issue got fixed over the night and I wasn't aware of this?

People can post a dozen complaints but they can't write up a single info post.

    Sorry for trying.

I'd love to help but I haven't experienced the mic problem (knock on wood). That might also be due to the fact that no call I have lasts longer than about 3 minutes...

What issue? I havent had a mic drop 90% of these problems I dont have havent seen didn't know about till I see all these post. I have developers device I treat it like that. I expect bugs thats why we have developers that improve and some times make worse the rom. Why do need the serial numbers?

Probably so he can send them to Google, maybe only a certain range was affected. Personally, I've never had the issue. You can't just get a warranty replacement?

Hey moosc, I haven't had a mic issue either but that doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist. I think it's great that the OP wants to try and do something about it. Don't know about the SN unless there might be a "batch" of phones with something bad in common.

A lot of people have never had the issue, but there are SO MANY different posts on here in the various different threads about it (granted many of them from the same people over and over) and all they are doing is stating the issue over and over without giving any info. This thread is directed at those people so we can get an honest look at why they could be experiencing this.

Thank you to those taking the time to respond with their info.

that was the reason for the SN, Yes. I dont think it's likely, but maybe, who knows.

I've had it happen twice. I was talking and all of a sudden they go "Hello, are you still there?". I can hear them. Lasted about 10 seconds and then I'm fine. Not a dropped call. No speakerphone. I use CDMS, stock ICS version 4.02. I mean how do you know about stuff like that? For all I know it was their speaker not my mike.

I know for you guys answering on Tapatalk that the list that I provided on first page isnt necessarily easy, but the questions that are on it are relatively important for compare and contrast, including the things like location, whether its happened over VOIP, etc and would make things a lot easier.

Its a PITA, I know, and I'm sorry, but it makes troubleshooting problems like this much easier.

I am stock as is my wife. I have volume plus, angry birds, paypal locator, wallet, a flashlight, kindle and maybe one or two more apps installed. I am one of the people with a near flawless gnex. I have never dropped data, never dropped a call, quite honestly My gnex works exactly like itz supposed too.......I have had this issue twice. My wife three times. Neither of us has experienced it in over a month. I will look at op and expand my info when I get home fromwork.

It seems to be related to only wireless to wireless calling. So calling or receiving a call from a LAN connection didn't see this issue. (so far).

Really? that's an interesting observation, especially if it proves to be true for everyone having this problem.

Samsung admits it may be hardware. Google says it is Verizon and vodaphones responsibility. Verizon just sends a refurb. 4.0.4 is confirmed to have not fixed it unofficially. There is no official party taking full responsibility yet, and certainly no OTA's floating around with a bug fix.

OP, if you solve the mic problem, my hat will be off to you. I had it, and don't care to "hunt it down and spend monumental hours trying." Good luck with your quest P.

In my eyes it is a little to late for me to FE re interested. All the best to those that keep trying like yourself. Google, you suck.

It isn't just wireless to wireless calling lol. Happens on land lines to. The problem lies 100% in the nexus alone.

Understandable. I have read the many posts you have written up explaining your issue, so I have a general gist of everything you did as well. Really sorry it didnt work out for you.

If you dont mind, Since you are one of the few that said you had tried different ROMs and the likes which pretty much makes you one of the only ones that has tried multiple software configurations, could u tell me any of the locations you can remember it cutting out on you? I cant remember whether or not you said you travel.

This probably isn't going to be very helpful since my problem seems a little different, but for what it is worth...

I bought a GNex on launch day. After a little over a week, I made a call and the other person could not hear me. I hung up and called back and it was fine. Around this time, the phone also got in the habit of randomly rebooting itself about once or twice a day. At other times, it would freeze for a while. A few days later, an intermittant problem started with the rear speaker not working for video files and music. It also intermittantly wouldn't have sound when plugged into my TV using a micro USB to HDMI adapter. These audio issues started as occasional and then happened more and more. A few more days and both the mic and earpiece speaker were also only working intermittantly when making calls. These problems got worse and worse until the only way I could make calls or listen to music was by using a headset. After a month of ownership, I took the phone back to the Verizon corporate store where I bought it and exchanged it for another GNex under the one year warranty. The new one has been fine so far.

No problem buddy, BTW, nice write up and questions. If I get time I will answere them all the best I can (this weekend) I was always on 3G at full bars @ home. It didn't frustrate me so much talking with family, but then when it happened to me talking with a girlfriend, it bothered me! Nice work.

Frequency of dropouts (estimation): About 3 with my 3rd GNex. And 2-3 for the first 2 GNex's I had. A piece!

Your physical location (preferably locations you have noticed the mic to have dropped out) City, State preferred: Raleigh-Durham, NC

Were you using the Speaker Phone? (yes/no/both): No

Do you use any type of Voice over IP apps or video chatting apps (Skype, google talk, etc...)?: Yesm But Rarely
    - Which ones?: Skype, Google Talk, Tango, G+
    - Mic Cut outs during those calls?: No

    Is your phone encrypted?: ?

Sim Card Lock enabled?: I dont know? Its all Stock! lol

Anything Enabled in "Developer Options"?: No
    -If so, what?:

Have you tried a factory reset?: No

Have you tried using the phone with nothing but the original apps that came with the phone installed?: No
if yes, were you still getting cut-outs?:

    Bootloader Unlocked?: No

    Tried different ROMs?: Yes
    - Which ones?: Just tried with this latest GNex I have. 4.0.4. Then Flashed back to 4.0.2 and locked the bootloader. But I never had a call while I was on 4.0.4

I give you a lot of credit for dedicating the time into putting this up. I agree with you, when it happens it is really frustrating. And its like it only happens when it wants to. I think if a majority of the people talked on the phone a lot, they might realize it happen to them. I personaly know a lot of people that rarely talk on the phone. Including myself. It just happens to happen when I do make that call, sometimes. Its frustrating and at some points it makes me feel like selling it on Ebay and getting a different phone, like Razr or something. Only because this issue is widespread and Google or Verizon arent doing a damn thing about it.

    Temporary Fixes Problem with Soft-Reset

It's getting very frustrating now; almost happening on a daily basis; a soft-reset seems to do the trick but this is getting tiresome.. Been on the phone with Verizon three times now, and they are not "aware" of any problems, BS..! I know some of you guys are also reporting the same issues...

It got so bad last night, that I turned on the SVP - WiFi Hotspot - (not rooted) and use my old HTC Desire to Skype a call, data seems to be fine so just CDMA. My wife says that it sounds really muffled, like I'm under water, calls now Pop & Crackle on a regular basis, and call quality becomes horrible.

The phone hasn't been soft-booted for about a week, when it acted up but seemed to go away when when the Verizon tech walked me through it over the phone; call me on it and had me call out; worked fine, but now today, it's doing the same thing.

The next thing to do next would be to do a Factory-Reset; and if that doesn't do it; they would need to replace my phone. I do not want to do a Factory-Reset; it's a pain in the ***...

Ok, so we should take a poll, who has called Verizon about this issue? I know they are aware of the problem... I will keep ing maybe even try to get some credit before I have to Hard-Reset next.

I still love the phone, just want the problem to go away...
