At that point you could just use remote desktop or VNC to an actual desktop =p

You can, when you plug in the MHL adapter to a TV it will automatically set it up as such.

Obviously the ability for a horizontal desktop exists, but the only known trigger of this configuration is the MHL adapter.

If you hook it up to a tv you won't need any extra software. But in order to hook it up to the tv you need that adapter. If you're talking about on the phone itself, you can install a different launcher but that's the only way that'll happen.

The Nova launcher allows horizontal home screen.

Nifty, although this has been a perfectly viable option since Android 3.1 came out a few months ago.
