Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
I've had my heart set on getting a Galaxy Nexus when it came out in December. After reading numerous reviews of poor battery life and data reception, I chose to keep using my current device for a while.
I used to visit this forum daily, and saw numerous complaints. As I scroll through the forum now, I don't see as many threads about poor battery life and reception. Is the Nexus still plague with those problems? I wasn't sure if users stopped talking about those issues, or if recent updates have addressed those concerns.

There are problems with the phone. It just depends how tolerant you can be. Maybe hold off a bit to see if the phone sees an update.

Re: Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
I've never had any issues with my GN. If you want to have the latest version of Android, or you want to root and install a huge assortment of ROMs (running even newer versions of Android) and don't like Verizon forcing you to have a bunch of bloat apps bogging down your phone, get the GN. If none of things bother you, get whatever device is most appealing to you. They all run well.

Re: Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
It all depends on what you are looking for. Posting a question like this in a forum like this, will generally get you responses that favor this type of phone. If you post the same exact question in the Razr forums, you'll get answers that favor that particular phone, the same goes with the Rezound or most any other phone.
If you are looking for a phone that uses the current version of Android, has a spectacular screen, and a large screen. This is the phone for you. If you are looking for a phone that has a rather long battery life (especially for the smartphone world), the Razr Maxx is the phone to choose. - 03-25-2012, 03:30 PM #10
Re: Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
I like my Nexus but with a few new phones that should be coming out soon, I'd wait unless you can get a killer deal. I haven't had many of the issues that others have said they are having but I have had a few of my own. I've had the nexus for a little over 3 months and the only problems I have had were 1. On ONE of my 1000s of calls (I use my phone for work and personal use) there was a loud and screeching sound. I ended the call and reset the phone, haven't heard it since. 2. Just this past wednesday no one could hear me, even with bluetooth. Restart phone, haven't had the problem since. I have the 2100mah battery and it lasts me from the time I go to the gym 4:45am til I get home from work, usually around 6-7pm with about 20% battery life left. I am in a strong 4G area (los angeles) so its not usually going back and forth between 4/3/1x but when it does, that can be a mood changer as it takes forever sometimes and I end up putting it on airplane mode and then back off and im good to go. I had LOW expectations for this phone when reading all of the problems but it has been probably the most solid phone I have had as of late. (thunderbolt and charge before)

Re: Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
I love my GN, there isnt a phone out right now i would trade it for. If the fighter launches with a 4.6" screen, hd screen and a MAXX sized battery running ICS, then maybe id consider switching just for better battery life and better radios.

Re: Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
I find myself getting bored with the Nexus, so I'm not sure how much longer I'll be with it. I have contemplated (more than once) selling the Nexus on ebay and getting a RAZR Maxx, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Forthcoming handsets from AT&T are also drawing my eye.

Based on the replies, I see some are still having issues with it. I saw quite a few bad reviews for it on the Verizon website, buy I wasn't sure if those were from first time smartphone or Android users. Getting the same or similar reviews from a forum where true Android users hang out is something I should keep in mind.
The Maxx has numerous positive reviews on the Verizon site, as well as this site. I do like the multi tasking abilities of the Nexus. I noticed how I could edit or add a contact in the address book. If I went back to the address book, I could continue where I left off. No other phone I've tried can do that. It's an awesome feature, but I'm not sure it's worth it if problems still plague the device. I'll see what others report after the next update is pushed out.

I've had my nexus for about a week now and I love it. I haven't had problems with it. Yes the speaker volume is a little low but the volume+ app handles that with ease. If you are looking for a fun, powerful, root friendly device I would say go for it it is my favorite phone yet. The battery life is as good as an 1850mah 4g phone can be.

Re: Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
all the hype about fast updates from google is bull. this phone has been updated once, and as far as I can tell, the update didn't address major deficiencies the phone has.
this phone was hyped like crazy and while the newness factor did fulfil my desire for change, i'm finding that it's simply just another android phone. I probably would feel this way with most phones though. I came from a droid 3 which i thought was a pretty solid phone with decent features and a nice host of accessories.
as of late, I've been really in need to text message or email images for various reasons and the fact that this phone still will not do it is driving me crazy. i also really which that there was a good car dock withe charging solution available, which as of last time I checked there wasn't (a few months ago). low speaker volume is annoying, and when you put the speaker on max volume the sound quality takes a huge dive.
i get no 4g signal in my home which essentially makes this phone a 3g device that I rely on wifi.
the battery has been fine for me as long as I keep the screen brightness on auto.
bottom line for me, is that the newness factor has now worn off and the lack of updates, combined with the fact that one particular app I use a lot is still buggy, has left me somewhat disapointed with my experience. I understand that bad apps really aren't related to a devices quality, but I have nothing else to judge but my experience.
i jumped on this device when it became available because I'm locked into the unlimited 4g data which I think verizon will do away with sooner or later and I wanted to get grandfathered in. I also expected them to continue to expand their 4g network but I'm still waiting.
i forgot to mention that you are quite limited with ring tones as well. - 03-25-2012, 11:12 PM #23

Re: Should I get a Nexus or get something else?
It did, actually. 4.0.1 was buggier than all get out.
Another one bitten by the hype Beast!this phone was hyped like crazy and while the newness factor did fulfil my desire for change, i'm finding that it's simply just another android phone. I probably would feel this way with most phones though. I came from a droid 3 which i thought was a pretty solid phone with decent features and a nice host of accessories.
Erm. Huh? I can text and email images just fine. What do you mean with this one?as of late, I've been really in need to text message or email images for various reasons and the fact that this phone still will not do it is driving me crazy.
This one confuses me. So you're complaining about the low speaker volume, but then you complain about the high volume too?i also really which that there was a good car dock withe charging solution available, which as of last time I checked there wasn't (a few months ago). low speaker volume is annoying, and when you put the speaker on max volume the sound quality takes a huge dive.
(oh, and the fix for low volume has been talked about ad nauseum in the form of Volume+)
Do you otherwise have 4G on your property? Are you in a full or extended signal area?i get no 4g signal in my home which essentially makes this phone a 3g device that I rely on wifi.
Your choice of phone is unrelated to a developer's inability to update their apps for ICS. You should separate that from the overall experience, because the phone has nothing to do with it.the battery has been fine for me as long as I keep the screen brightness on auto.
bottom line for me, is that the newness factor has now worn off and the lack of updates, combined with the fact that one particular app I use a lot is still buggy, has left me somewhat disapointed with my experience. They're expanding it monthly. They just don't make big announcements about it anymore because there isn't a need to.i jumped on this device when it became available because I'm locked into the unlimited 4g data which I think verizon will do away with sooner or later and I wanted to get grandfathered in. I also expected them to continue to expand their 4g network but I'm still waiting.
...what?i forgot to mention that you are quite limited with ring tones as well.
Adding more ringtones, notification tones, and alarm tones, is as easy as creating three folders on the phone and dragging and dropping them into it. Its about as easy as you can get.
