Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
I've been planning on picking up the Galaxy Nexus for a while now. (Paying off other things that came first)
After reading these forums, I've been second guessing my decision. I read about the data loss issues from the start and that didn't bother me too much ONLY because I read about the updates supposedly fixing this.
Now I'm seeing things about defective screens, bad volume, screeching, echoing on headphones, etc. I am aware that this may not represent the majority of users who have the phone but its still enough to make me nervous on upgrading.
I am almost considering the Razr Maxx for the decent radio, build quality, and battery life but I am trying to distance myself from Motorola devices for a few reasons. (DROID X was my first Android device. Currently on Bionic)
I have until Friday to make up my mind. Just hoping that if I do decide to pick up the GN, it wont have to be returned. I'd hate to waste an upgrade. - 03-28-2012, 02:49 PM #2
Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
Getting a bad device is a chance you will take with any purchase.
I don't have a defective screen, the volume is fine, I don't have signal issues, and every phone I've owned has has BT echoing from time to time.
My only real problem with the Nexus is with javascript, which I know can be fixed with an update since the problem doesn't exist on alternate ROMs. - 03-28-2012, 02:56 PM #3
Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
The only issue I've got with my nexus is that I dropped it and the side of my phone is all dinged up. I have no data issues, no volume issues, no BT issues nothing.

Oh god don't remind me about the Blackberry Storm, but rest assured it'll never be that bad even if you do have problems with that phone haha.

Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
No Dude this is not the BB Storm (aka The Freezphone). The main hangup is the LTE/CDMA switcheroo losing a signal and Verizon. I use 3G and mine's fine. Sometimes the caller can't hear me for a few secs but that isn't often and it's probably them. The ICS rocks, and so does the screen. The volume is fine, the battery is fine. Better than my HTC Incredible by a lot.
EDIT: If the OP is in Phx (I'm Prescott) the LTE is spotty there where I've been (N. Scottsdale). But it will get better.Last edited by thebignewt; 03-28-2012 at 04:15 PM.

Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
Absolutely love my GNEX
More importantly, for me, it's about as future proof as a phone can get since I plan to keep it for 2 years. I haven't even rooted yet and that's where this phone really dominates...so I've read. Definitely sucks for the people who've received shoddy handsets (of course the LOUD minority as it goes), but once you've experienced a proper GNEX I'm quite sure you'll want nothing else. Quite a few of my friends and coworkers ran out and got their own after using mine. Good luck.

Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
My two cents:
I've had a few problems with this phone. I've had multitouch issues (which are being resolved in a future update), and my phone has a fried battery port; I currently am having a replacement shipped to me, no charge.
In my opinion, this is the best android phone on Verizon, and one of the better ones period. Ice Cream Sandwich is great, and I would sincerely say the pros outweigh the cons. Plus the screen is just peachy.Tongue in cheek idealists, I'm not giving up the claim that I can save the world and all I need is my friends. - 03-28-2012, 05:08 PM #12
Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
I thought 3 times about getting a Nexus. I own one, my wife owns one, my daughter owns one. They all run perfectly.

Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
I did not read everyone's response but I almost made the same mistake about not getting this phone. Look on any phone forum and you will see almost every phone has issues. This phone is awesome and I am glad I got this phone.

Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
I would think three times for sure....I don't recommend it. That said, it is better than a storm lol. I think the HTC/Motorola/Samsung offerings as of late are better. Opinion finished.

The Maxx is a great phone. But, it is lacking one major thing that the Nexus has. ICS.. It also doesn’t look like it will get for a while.

Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
I upgraded a Droid X for the Galaxy Nexus and I could not be happier. I was a little nervous also, but the battery life is about the same as the X, it switches from 3G to 4G without a hiccup and the screen is
beautiful. I say go for it and you always have a 30 day window to exchange if you have problems. - 03-28-2012, 06:44 PM #19

You'll regret it if you don't pick up something with an Hd screen guarantee you'll be back in the store 4 months from now shelling out more money. Besides all of the quirks that you've heard about are a update away for most people. (I'm already on 4.0.4.) It really made this device a winner. Just look up people choice awards phonedog.com .

Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
Well even if it were an upgrade, don't you still have a 14-day return period to exchange it for a new phone if it doesn't work out for you?
Anyways, in my experience, the Galaxy Nexus has been an absolutely solid phone and now doubly so after flashing custom ROMs. But of course that's not for everyone. I seriously think data drops on LTE depends on your location. Lately it's been a lot better for me but it does occasionally happen at some places in the city where I live (Orlando, FL). Then again, that occurred even with my Bionic and Thunderbolt so I'm not going to lay the blame on my Gnex as the problem.
The screen has been great (no scratches so far), sound is okay if albeit comparatively fainter on stock Android ROMs, ICS is an amazing OS, I love the button placements, and the camera takes good photos. My only complaint is how easy it so to scratch the bottom edge of the phone when inserting a headphone jack or the micro USB cable.
I've switched through 3 phones last year (Droid X, Thunderbolt, and then the Bionic). Now that I have a Nexus, I think I can finally settle down on my phone binge. I'm planning to keep this phone for the duration of my contract. It's unfortunate that Verizon may never get another Nexus; for some reason I get the feeling the whole debacle with it's release here in the US left a sour taste in Google's mouth. - 03-29-2012, 08:48 AM #24
Re: Thinking Twice About Getting the GN
I absolutely love my GN. The only issue i have had is a reboot once every 3 weeks or so which does not bother me. I also have 6 friends who have the GN and they all love their device. I have only had three phones, the G1, Fascinate, and now the GN and i will tell you i will not go back to a non-vanilla android experience. It is just so much cleaner.
