Am I missing something here on how to take a picture and use it as the background? Those blue boxes for cropping really jack the final product up. Just wondering if I missed a step, its been awhile since I've used Android.

You need to expand the blue box by dragging the dots in the box. It'll enlarge the picture to the right size.

I usually get flikie wallpaper or picspeed wallpaper that can help with setting/cropping the wallpaper.

If you want an HD wallpaper app. Check out wallbase. I'll grab you a link and post it.

is an awesome wallpaper app. Especially helpful in setting up wallpapers using your own photos.

Otherwise, use picspeed or wallbase like others suggested.
