Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
And your device properly speaks all the names of the streets, using the default new TTS in ICS? If so, then the new version of Maps is not compatible with 4.0.2 - and probably for good reason. We're the last people on earth still using 4.0.2, as everyone else (even Sprint on CDMA) already has a higher version number. Thanks Verizon....

Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
As a note, Google devs stated this in 6.7 release notes:
"Bugs that we're currently investigating:
- Navigation voice issue for 4.0.2 "

Today I got "turn right, slight right, go straight" when I tested it after update. Bahahahaha. Glad I knew where I was going.

Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
Maps voice sucks anyway. I don't know why everyone is complaining...just look at the screen and turn where it shows you to turn. Or, if you're really interested in solving the problem, root your phone and run a newer OS (that's kind of the whole point of getting a Nexus).

Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
running a newer os wont fix the problem seeing that we are on the newest os. google is aware of the issue and working on a fix they just need some time.

Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
This is illegal in some states... including the two I drive in all the time. I called Verizon technical support to find out if there was any way to be upgraded to 4.0.4 outside of the normal schedule but of course the answer is no. Was told would probably be rolled out within the next month.

Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
No, I'm pretty sure he is referring to the fact that it is illegal to look at any screens while driving in some states. Whether it is your phone or a GPS device. I don't live there, but I'm pretty sure in California, you can't have your GPS mounted any where in your car (or maybe its just on the windsheild)... someone can clarify.

Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
California is very restrictive as to where a GPS can be mounted. Here's the law...
"the GPS must be mounted within "a 7-inch square area in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver (the passenger side) or in a 5-inch square area in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver (the lower left corner of the windshield)"Droid (2009 original stock) --> Incredible --> Thunderbolt (Rooted/ROMed) --> Galaxy Nexus (Rooted/ROMed) --> Note 2 (stock) - 05-11-2012, 10:01 PM #47

I know that it works on my transformer pad fine. It may be the nexus that could be the problem.

Re: Google Maps/Navigation no longer speaking street names
It doesn't seem like this will be fixed any time soon. My only solution to this aggravating nightmare of a problem was to uninstall all updates and then install an APK for 6.5.1. Search for "maps 6.5.1 apk" and download and install, and you will have at least some of your functionality back. At least that way, we can actually use it safely.
