    Default 4.04- Great update- Not!

So after waiting nearly 1/2 year for the infamous 'frequent updates, direct from Google', I finally got my OTA update this morning.

The only problem is I no longer get 4G in my house and my speeds are 1/10 what they were prior to the update!!! I always got 4G in my house prior to the update and I checked my Tab 7.7 to verify that 4G is not down in my area. It's not.

So this this is the great update? These are the new great radios? I can see how the switching problem has been solved, you just don't allow the phone to switch to 4G very easily (I haven't gone out yet to even verify if I can no longer get 4G anywhere).

I checked settings and they are correct. If this is what I have to look forward to with this update, I will ditch this '3Gwonder' and move on to a new phone.

So is this now a common occurrence with other owners? I can't tell you how disgusted I am!

What would you like an official apology from Verizon? Are you the first person to own a possible lemon phone? Ive been seeing your post all morning ing about the update.

If the update did that you more than likely have a defective device. While some report no change in signal, and some report a positive change in signal, I have never heard of this.

Honestly, while I understand and sympathize with the Verizon condemnation, there's no way they release an update that destroys your phone's signal.

My 4G reception/speed has also taken a hit after upgrading to 4.0.4.

4.0.2 worked great for some people (like me) while others (seems like half the forum users) have had serious issues on that version.

4.0.4 is a big improvement for a lot of people but is more like a downgrade for some (like me).

I think the hostility from both sides needs to end. Just because your version is working fine, don't assume it is the same for others or that they don't know what they are talking about.

True that, there is no reason to be bitter or hostile--from either side. If something isn't working, troubleshoot it to isolate it. If software is OK here, bad there, and great somewhere else, then pointing to the software and saying that that is the root of the issue is not necessarily the best way to do that. The probabilities simply do not play out; so while a grave reaction is understandable (and if I was him, I'd be livid), I'd rather get down to figuring out what happened.

I've been on these radios since they first leaked and they've been nothing but stellar. Possible causes I can think of are (1) a bad install, (2) hardware defects that were somehow covered up with 4.0.2, (3) the other device is reading 4G a bit more generously than it should. There could also be a variety of little "ghosts" in the phone that are working wonders.

My point--I'm hesitate to blame an update when different people have different results. That almost always points to inherent physical/hardware defects.

I'm new to all this stuff but can Wug's unlock the bootloader on the OTA .4, roll it back to stock .2, then try another OTA to see if that fixes it? Or if not then just see what happens with the leaked update? I hear they were the exact same file but everyone else I've really talked to has heard that it improves the radios.

Every screenshot I've seen shows it's the same set of radios; the size of the file also indicates it's exactly the same. If you're still having issues, then that points more towards potential hardware defects.

For wanting to try it again, I presume you'll be able to unlock with Wug's, but if you want to root you'll need to use the new SU app found in a variety of threads in both this and the development subforum.

    Agreed with OP.

Although some improvement can be seen, unless I run in 3G most of the time the phone is in standby, the constant struggle to keep a 4G signal has not been resolved, and even tho it does switch to 3G more quickly it is still having significant issues making/keeping a solid data connection which is impacting battery-life. Picking up the phone and interacting with something that uses data still frequently results in a timeout, even when running in 3G only.

Still seeing major battery drain in 4G - getting 12-16 hours with minimal use and sync off; although, it now seems to be able to keep charging the battery when streaming or tethering in 4G, rather than slowly losing a charge as it did with 4.0.2.

Try new similar card? I got my update at 0230 and my signal strength went up at home from 2 bars to 4 and 103 dBm to holding 80.I'm using signal maps network refresh and all is well here in NW Ohio.

IMO, The hostility toward the OP in this case is due to the fact that he has posted these comments multiple times in every single thread dealing with the 4.0.4 update.

I fear this is a hardware issue.

What "frequent" updates does everyone keep talking about????? Frequent updates have nothing to do with the Nexus! It's a great update for me, because where I use to get no 4g data (in my bathroom) I just got 6 mbs download speed. For anywhere in my apartment that is insane for being on 4g. I finally have data in my apartment. Now when I turn of wifi on my phone it immediately has 4g. NO waiting at all. You may just need a new phone, it happens to everyone.

I experienced the same exact result when flashing the first set of leaked 4.0.4 radios.

I did it manually like I've mentioned before and have 0 problems with it. When I briefly went back to .2 I had major issues with the wifi at work. But with .4 I have yet to encounter any problem with anything. I was more thinking for the guy that was having issues. Maybe something went wrong with the update dunno.

That could be; when it gets down to it, there are limited explanations and I don't think Verizon releasing new radios that makes your signal worse is a valid or probable explanation .

OP - can you post a screenshot of your About Phone screen in Settings, please?

Maybe its the network. I was just in the Rezound forums and a guy is having similar issues with keeping 4G. Maybe you guys are in the same area.

While the leaked radios worked differently for me, it wasn't much of an improvement. So fart these are much better for me at least. I'm impressed.

Weird. They're the same exact radios as the last leak.

Signal was fine before the update and fine after. Maybe just slightly better looking at dBm but difference is so small can't definitively say it's due to the update vs random fluctuations. It certainly hasn't gotten worse though. Like someone mentioned, maybe it's the network in the area?
