Hangs when rebooting for 4.04 install

My stock Galaxy Nexus hangs at the Google splash when rebooting for the automatic installation of 4.04. It hangs for at least overnight. The only way to proceed is to pull the battery. I have tries 4-5 times so far with the same result.
Any suggestions?

I'd boot into recovery and clear cache and user data. It'll wipe your phone but it should at least get it to reboot.

Ack! Before doing that I will need to learn how to backup & restore...

Any suggestions for a possible fix that doesn't entail wiping out my data?

You can try to backup using the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit

If a battery pull hasn't fixed that boot loop I don't have any other useful suggestions. A 24 hour boot loop isn't a good sign.
