Coming from the Rezound this will be the 1st software update for me on the GNex. Will the new build leak out a few weeks before the OTA? Does Google add the factory image to their website before the OTA?
I know I was able to flash the leaked RUUs on the Rezound. I run GFE for work email so I can't root so I have to wait for official builds... Thanks

Stop being so whiny. All you have done in every thread you've posted in is whine and complain about an update timetable that you know nothing about, compared with devices that don't even exist yet. Its ridiculous. Until any of those things come to pass, stop riling up people here for no good reason.

Same here I do not want to root my phone. Just release the JB update

Re: Let's guess how long our JB official OTA will take!
If you dont have any restrictions with work email there is really no reason you shouldnt root. I can't root or put roms on my G nex because my firm uses GOOD for enterprise and can detect it. I have rooted my tablet and flashed the crap out of it. If you took the time and learned how to do it after a few hours of research you would be kicking yourself for not having done it sooner.

Re: Let's guess how long our JB official OTA will take!
I think the majority of us who are watching this thread are aware that we could root if we wanted to, but for various reasons have found it isn't a good option for us. We are eager to get the features of JB (in my case Google Now), so we follow this thread to find out when that will come. Those who come in and tell us we should just root have a different mindset.
In my case, I have spent 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there, etc. reading up on unlocking, rooting, and upgrading your OS (or whatever you call it). Probably have spent 2-3 hours total reading or watching Youtube demos. Can't say I understand much of any of it even after that. And I'm not motivated to try it any more because I'd rather spend my nights and weekends outdoors or with friends than messing around with a piece of technology that I use as a functional tool in my life. I don't use it as something to experiment with. And, I asked some questions in a post in the ROMs section, and was told quite clearly that I'd lose my icon layout, home screen folders layouts, widgets, app logins and settings, etc. I would probably also have to reset Google authenticator on both my phone and tablet so they're in sync again. It just isn't worth all that hassle to me. Maybe to others, but not to me. We all have different priorities.
I will continue to watch this thread and the Android Central news articles because, like I said, I'm eager to get Google Now. But I've given up on trying to understand the custom modification process, and I don't particularly care to start from scratch with all my layouts and settings.
Hope that makes a little sense.Thanked by 4: - 08-23-2012, 06:18 PM #261

Not wanting to root is fully legitimate. (Especially things that are "at your risk") though I do get from your post that you are partly interested....
I had lost interest in technology for many years until i got a smartphone ... (a Motorola droid i didn't even have a working computer of my own at the time) I never rooted any phone prior to my gnex...
One thing that blew me away was how much I had "missed out" on in technology I knew less than nontechnical people, especially in terms of what I was hearing about Android while waiting for froyo update (cwm? Tibu? Wtf?!?!)
I avoided rooting even though I was a bit intrigued... i didn't want to delete things, mess with warranties and glitches, and wasn't sure of the ethics either.
Honestly I basically started spending a few minutes here and there playing with stuff, downloaded the SDK from Google got the drivers working with a bit of work before I even decided to root.
I'm on windows Vista so adb and fastboot work just like many older DOS apps typing /help on a whim was enough to show me some of what they could do.
From there everything else kinda started to make sense using those tools isn't really much to do with rooting but it was enough to show me a lot of the terms and directions I didn't understand just looked hard and complex because they're explaining simple stuff very carefully lol.
This is long but maybe its not a bad idea to download and look at the tools without actually doing anything, like I did before even deciding to do anything that modifies stuff?

Re: Let's guess how long our JB official OTA will take!
Im running the leak now, works well, i havnt noticed a big difference in radios but im taking that with a grain of salt because im in Mississippi and we have a hurricane heading in so im sure the networks are being strained.
Also noticed a new section in the messaging app in settings called "cell broadcasts" from what it appears it texts you with severe weather warnings which will come in handy in the next couple days. that along with the new google now update with public alerts - 08-30-2012, 01:31 AM #273
Re: Let's guess how long our JB official OTA will take!
flashed it earlier this morning and have not been able to put the phone down all day.. the leak plus the announcements from sony and samsung have truly made this a great day for android.

Re: Let's guess how long our JB official OTA will take!
I look forward to the official OTA. I keep telling myself I'm going to root, but now school started and life is going to get extremely busy when the program year starts up again at work. Maybe when CM10 has a release candidate.

Can't wait to ditch Bugless and get back onto an official build. I've been running the 7/19 nightly and I couldn't be bothered to update lol. If I'm gonna lose all my settings again, it might as well be for an official.
