Default Bionic being replaced by Nexus :)

Welp Come monday my Bionic is being replaced free of charge for a Nexus. Working on 3rd Bionic and got tired of it. Lucked out and was able to talk VZW into replacing with a Nexus. Soo! What sort of things do I have to look forward to/quirks to watch out for? I would have went with a nexus to begin with but the Blackberry I had that was on lifesupport died and I had to go with the Bionic since there was no word when Nexus was releasing. I will probably be getting the extended battery and going to Otterbox Defender this phone (all phones I own get this treatment since being in the military makes for rough handling). Anyway, look forward to all the glory that is Nexus.

I had a bionic for about a week (from launch day) before returning it on account of the initial audio problems it had. Went back to my Blackberry until the Nexus launched.

Are you getting a new Nexus from VZW or a refurb? (Refurb, I'm guessing?)

Actually the guy used a order code that gets me a brand new one re-labeled as a warranty replacement. So new nexus with battery and cover.

thanks for the welcome guys. can't wait for monday when fedex arrives at the door. 2 things I am going to have to overcome though. Bionic and Nexus use different sim cards so would have to get my contacts transfered and there is no memory slot on the nexus if I am mistaken so would have to transfer all my music/photos/videos via my computer.

You ought to have all your contacts on Google so you don't need to worry about that stuff, also so you won't be tied to needing VZW's backup assistant. If you need to do that..

Log into Myverizon on your computer, find the online backup assistant area, select all contacts and export as .csv file. Then log into your primary gmail account, go to contacts, and import the file. Might want to take some time to set them up just right, edit some things, etc... but now going forward everything will sync up with any android phone you log into

And yes you'll have to transfer everything from your computer (music, pics, etc).

THANKS! that will help with the contacts. Sucks about the photos and music, etc. Was tempted to go into the store to have them transfer everything.

Congrats on finally moving from the Bionic to the GNex!! I had a Bionic as my first Android phone back in September, and after going through 2 of them in less than 4 months I got them to give me back my upgrade and refund me for the Bionic so I could move over to the GNex. I'm pretty sure this will be my phone or at least a few years to come since I'm still grandfathered in to unlimited data. Thinking about taking the plunge this weekend and finally getting around to figuring out all of the unlocking and what have you to get updated to Jelly Bean.....

Best of luck with your new GNex!!!

Also if u don't want to use the new micro sim, u can trace out the micro sim to yours now and cut it out. I did this in reverse to see if it works on my old thunderbolt and indeed it does.

i did the backup assistant then imported them to my google contacts. Then merged contacts to tidy things up so when the new phone shows up I'll import from google and be ready to rock! Thanks for the help 2def. I just need to transfer all my stuff

you can always upload ur music to google music.

also you can plug your bionic to your pc and save your files to a folder somewhere. "desktop" then just do the same thing in reverse and drop them to your gnex when you get it.

If you want to unlock your new Nexus I would do that first as it wipes your phone.

still trying to figure out pros and cons about unlocking bootloader vs. leaving stock. Also if it voids my warranty or not.

still really unsure about the whole unlock/root/rom. Never done it before on any phone and will probably mess with that later on. Will probably just get the phone setup tomorrow and think more about it later. its not too hard to back everything up and do the unlock later. Want to do more research into it before I dive in the deep end.

Congrads on the nexus! Some things to look out for. Battery life stinks. I have three batteries with two extra chargers and leave one at work and one at home so I constantly have a battery charging and ready to go. Next thing is reception. Motorola phones tend to get better reception compared to nexus and I can definitely notice a difference in 4g reception from a RAZR compared to my phone but its livable for me. Lastly the volumeme is pretty low on the nexus which is fixed by downloading volume+ from the market.

As for rooting. Definitely do it!!! On the nexus it is soooo easy to do compared to other phones. There is an easy write up at galaxynexusrooting.com that I used. What this enables you to do is put jelly bean on our phones which makes the phone a lot more responsive and includes Google now (look up jelly bean reviews). Putting jelly bean on your phone will remove flash support though. Rooting has other advantages that didn't matter for me.

well i think for now I am probably going to run stock until I get familiar with the phone. Its alot easier than I thought to pull my music/photos/video so will mess with it down the road. I think once I get comfortable with the phone I will back it up and do the mods.

I am not an expert but unlocking your bootloader itself won't void your warranty. I had mine unlocked to install cyanogenmod. The radio on mine became extremely unstable. Tier 2 Tech support decided to send me a replacement, so I flashed back to stock. What I think a lot of people maybe do not know, or forget -- is that with the Galaxy Nexus you can relock the bootloader.

So for unlocking: fastboot oem unlock

to relock after flashing stock rom files: fastboot oem lock

Then you can send it in for warranty service etc, and it will show as stock/locked. Just my two cents. If you're interested in experimenting with custom roms, have fun and do it, just be careful what you flash and how you do it. One of the more important things to remember that I always do is check the MD5 of important files like the bootloader/radios before flashing them.

To the OP: Enjoy your new nexus!
