Messaging tone won't shut off -- annoying!

Hey there, folks on the forum..

I generally enjoy my Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone (on Verizon, if that matters). Two things bug me -- lousy battery life and a strange thing with the messaging alert tone that I'll explain now..

If I have the Messaging app open and a new text comes in, I get the alert tone I configured. The problem is that I can't turn it off without force-quitting the Messaging app. Please tell me that there is an alternative (or an update to my phone) to that kind of brute-force action.

I've been dealing with it as long as I've had the phone (nearly a year), but I decided to try to find a solution here, if I can..

Thanks for your help!

Go to Settings/Sounds/Volume. Are you able to turn the Notifications volume all the way down? This would silence your messaging notifications, but would also silence all others.

The other thing to do would be to open Settings while in your Messaging app, and change your Notification to Silent, if available. I can't think of an easy toggle, though.
