I was running on a treadmill today using Nike+ when it tells me not to turn the screen off because the accelerometer will turn off. My Gnex worked fine with the screen off but I can't vouch for other Android phones. It's probably a battery saving feature which is fine with me, but I did find it interesting. It's still the best phone I've ever owned.

Try this app called screen standby , it shuts off the backlight and leaves the screen off but the phone still active
