[INFO]As of right now the update is believed to be the fix for the exploit in the kernel of our devices and therefore is a major security fix for your devices. That being said... THIS OTA WILL BREAK ROOT IF YOU DOWNLOAD/INSTALL THE OTA WHILE ROOTED. If you want to keep your root status there are a couple of options that are listed below...

  1. Don't do the OTA and continue to ues the Exploit blocker.
  2. If you are unlocked/rooted flash Scotts kernel that has the exploit patched.
  3. Don't worry about it if you don't sideload apps.
  4. If you want the OTA, use Voodoo OTA rootkeeper to save root settings, perform OTA and then use Voodoo to reroot your device.

Simple as that.
[/INFO]

[Tip] To Kill update notice simply use your root. File manager and rename SDM.apk.

This can be found at directory path /system/app

For example:I renamed it to SDM.bak

Or you can freeze SDM.apk. using titanium backup aswell[/tip]

Sorry to ask - but I can't seem to find the answer to this. I understand that if you are rooted using the exploit and update, you will lose root. But I am updated using odin but still stock. Can I safely update? Will I lose root? TIA.

I believe you will loose root but I am not 100% sure

If you are rooted, no matter which way you rooted and staying stock (aka didn't flash any roms) you will lose root if you are going to run the OTA. That being said, you can use ODIN to go back to having root but that will bring you back to 4.1.1 considering it is a whole different image file and will rewrite you system.

Will freezing SDM 1.0 with Titanium work instead?

Update...

If you want to keep proper root avoid the OTA at all costs.

Just to ensure that you keep full and functioning root make sure that you avoid this OTA. The only way that you will be able to regain root would be to format back to factory default OS and reboot.

[Note] If you have accepted or want to accept the new OTA you are now able to and regain root and unlocked bootloader as a new method has been acheived.

Jailbreak / Root / TWRP Recovery -- Even after update [26JAN13]

I have not attempted this since I don't see the point of updating at this moment just for a security patch. But this is def useful for you all that have already accepted it [/note]

Others and I *who were stock, locked bootloader rooted* were able to preserve root by running Voodoo Rootkeeper before allowing the OTA to run. With Voodoo first backup root, second Temp. unroot, then run the OTA and finally back in Voodoo restore root.

I still can't get the OTA to take. I've temp unrooted with Voodoo, and I'm running the stock ROM. Any ideas?

Also, I have no path named /system, so cannot find the subfolder /system/apps. This business of needing to "defer" the OTA every 3 days is for the birds.

Oh believe me there is a /system folder or your phone would be kaput. Get ES File Explorer from Google Playstore and after opening it go 'Up' until your're at the "/" folder. Look on that page for the folder named System. Also you could use Titanium backup and freeze SDM.apk. You may need to spring for the pro version of Tibu to freeze.
