I really use this feature on my Thunderbolt a lot and it has been very beneficial to me in certain instances. Does anyone know if the S3 can do it? I know it can when connected to LTE but a lot of places I go don't have LTE and even then I don't use LTE generally due to horrible battery.

Based on the documentation, it looks like you should be fine. On my phone now, but there's another thread in this section that has the specifics.

According to KSmithInNY (Android Dev) The SGS3 is listed with the FCC as SVDO and SVLTE capable. So yes this function will work with data over EVDO or LTE (once launched) because the 1x radio (voice) is separated and independent of the radios using data.
So.....unless this is wrong you should be able to.
