Release day is here
I just got a DROID RAZR Maxx yesterday to hold me off till today for the s3 realease. Turns out though I really like the Maxx. Would anyone on here keep the Maxx or go change out for the s3. I really don't know what to do. Would I be future proofed with the Maxx or should I go with the s3 so it lasts me the full 2 years?

Re: Release day is here
The Razr/Razr Maxx are slated for ICS updates, but with Motorola's update history, I don't think I'd count on anything beyond that.
If you're determined to have the same phone for two years, I'd want to go with whatever had the latest specs and the best shot at getting at least one more update...so that would be the GS3. - 07-12-2012, 08:41 AM #3

Yeah it is an excellent phone I love it already and I like it more everyday but I just wanna make sure that ics isn't the last update this thing will see I wish they would give more info. Do you think the phone has the proper specs for a jellybean update and possibly the next version of android. The dx I had was on eclair then it got froyo and finally gingerbread so they updated that one to 2 other os so I don't see why they couldn't with this

Re: Release day is here
Yeah, I guess they did have a much better history back in the DX era. Hopefully the lack of ICS updates last year to devices that were perfectly capable of running it (DX2, D4, Photon/Electrify,Atrix) were just from the uncertainty of the Google takeover.
One more thing to consider: The battery on the Maxx is bigger, but without tearing the phone apart and risking it becoming a doorstop, it's also the only battery that it will ever have. Most likely it'll hang in there for two years, but with the GS3 being so universally available, replacements (even high-capacity ones) will be dirt cheap. - 07-12-2012, 09:55 AM #6
Re: Release day is here
I'm trying to make a similar decision right now. I got the S3 on Monday (preorder) and it works great at home, but in my office building it misses/drops calls a lot. It's pretty much unusable sitting at my desk. I don't use it for business, and I don't make/receive many personal calls during the day anyways, but I want to know that it will ring if someone is trying to call me.
The RAZR is the only other phone that interests me, it's the most similar to my DX, but it would allow me to keep my unlimited and still get on LTE. But, it's not as nice of a phone overall and there's no guarantee that it will perform as well for voice reliability as my DX. I'll be interested to see what other people think... I am in the minority of people who don't care if it ever gets another update, I just want it to work.
The other thing I'm considering would be to use call forwarding to forward my cell to my desk during the day. I pretty much sit here all day (engineer) so it's not like I need the mobility, I need the reliability. I'm thinking there's probably a way to set tasker and/or an NFC tag to automatically forward to my office when I'm here... Any thoughts on that idea? Is that a crazy extent to go to just to keep my S3? - 07-12-2012, 10:08 AM

Both phones are excellent phones but its a known fact that moto provides the best cell radios in their phones so if its cell power you want the DROID RAZR maxx would be best for you it will get you through a full work day...it has ics...and since I've had it I had perfect reception...if you don't care about updates but wanna be somewhat up to date this phone is 100% for you. I was all for getting the s3 but now having this for almost a full day I'm seriously on the fence and don't know what to do

Anybody pick it up in the store today? How stocked are they?

Re: Release day is here
How's the screen on the RAZR? That's my biggest concern in hardware difference, and I'm sure the camera isn't quite as good. But I was satisfied with the camera on my DX, when it worked... I know the processor isn't as good and it has less RAM. I'd prefer to have the most "future-proof" phone possible since it will most likely be my last phone with VZW, but at the same time I need to be able to make calls.

Re: Release day is here
I was able to go to my local best buy mobile and swap out my galaxy nexus that suffered from dropped data (model from China) and pick up a 32gb s3 in white.
This thing is nice so far - 07-12-2012, 12:35 PM

The screen on the RAZR is decent its not as good as the s3 but it is good for when the phone came out. The RAZR opens up apps as soon as you hit it and there is little to no lag. The moat future proof phone would be the s3 because Samsung already said it will get the jellybean update and it will be a good phone for a while as is the s2 still. Let me know what you do as I am still making my decision. Anyone move from the RAZR to s3 and like it

Re: Release day is here
That's the thing- it doesn't show no service, it actually shows a couple bars, which as I understand is actually the CDMA signal, Verizon set it that way to make people think they had a better LTE signal than they do. But when I call the phone it either rings half a ring then goes to voicemail (and shows a missed call), or it goes straight to voicemail without ringing at all. And when it goes straight to VM without ringing, it still shows a missed call, which I've never seen before.
I'm planning to go to a VZ store tonight, just to take a look at a RAZR for comparison. I'll plan to talk to a rep too, even though I don't think they'll be able to help much... maybe they can at least swap out my SIM and see if that helps. If not, I'll call tech support tomorrow. - 07-12-2012, 12:37 PM #16
Re: Release day is here
Will do, thanks for your input.
I did try out call forwarding, just set up a contact speed dial for the number to forward to my desk, and another one to cancel the forward. I think that may work pretty slick, especially if I can figure out an automated way to do it. That's going to make me more likely to keep the S3. I'm going to go all over town this weekend and test it, just to make sure coverage is good everywhere BUT the concrete building I work in...Last edited by droidXclone; 07-12-2012 at 12:48 PM.

Re: Release day is here
No way, RAZRs are way too 'blocky' for me.
As an aside, I cruised into my local VZW this morning at about 9:10, waited about fifteen minutes to pick up my GS3, only to find out they don't have 32 Gig phones in the store, they have to be ordered. ~sigh~ So once again I wait. Supposedly it ships by 7/16. - 07-12-2012, 01:36 PM #19

Re: Release day is here
I picked up my blue 16GB GSIII at Best Buy. My upgrade was due on Saturday, 7/14, but BB allowed me to use it two days early. It seemed like they had plenty of units in stock, and I didn't make it there 'til 11:00 AM.
And I'm VERY happy so far, though it's been on the charger all day so I don't have any basis for judging battery life. I'm going to let it run out over the weekend. I'm coming from a RAZR MAXX, which I still like quite a bit, but the processor, RAM and screen-resolution bumps convinced me to pick up the GSIII.
Unfortunately, I lost unlimited data in the process, but I average substantially less than 2GB, so that shouldn't be much of a problem. - 07-12-2012, 01:53 PM #22
Re: Release day is here
I was going to go by a store this evening to pick up a 32GB model. Is it true that no stores have them? Doesn't make sense to me as I figured for only 50 bucks more to get the 32GB was an easy choice and that would be the one they would have out right away. As usual, no logic in the release of devices by VZW.

Re: Release day is here
I have both phones, gave the Maxx to my wife to get her on 4G from an IP4s so I can make a fairly decent comparison. I bought the Maxx when it came out and it is an awesome phone. Once you get used to the battery it's hard trying not to compare it to another phone Getting ICS a few weeks ago was icing on the cake. The radio, call quality, etc are better on the Maxx also.
The S3 is quick, it's noticeable between the two phones but if you never use the S3, you'll never miss the difference. The screen on the S3 is nicer too. Not a fan of the home button because it's too iPhone, all the way down to taking a screen shot. There are some nice features loaded into the S3 but I am not using them, the gestures and S Voice. They are more fluff than useful and I figured they would add to the battery drain. With casual use you can go from 7am to 7pm and still have 30% of battery. With the Maxx, i could go almost 30 hours.
I'm sure i missed other features, etc, but as I told a friend the other day asking which phone to buy, I still suggested the Maxx over the S3. Before anyone goes crazy on me, I am using the S3. My wife only uses about .5GB/mo to check emails and FB plus the S3 would be overkill for her.
