I currently have a GNex and really want to switch over to the s3. For everyone that had a Gnex did u sell it it first then buy the s3? or did u pay like full retail and then sell it?(Not trying to do that)

Not that I have done it ... but this depends on if you already have enough money to pay for it , or if you need a little bit of money to put towards the purchase.

if you have a legacy (non share everything) family plan with an available line, add a line with a basic or dummy phone. Still expensive, but cheaper than paying full retail.
