Until the software is fixed, try an app called Reduce Photo Size. It adds the app as an option to the list of sharing options. After compressing the photo you can send it from within the app. I rarely send pictures via MMS but I use the app when I'm emailing photos to reduce file size. Definitely beats taking the same photo twice at different resolutions, which isn't always possible.

I just found a way to send 8mp pics via text messaging. First, take an 8mp pic and then view it in the gallery. Next, press the menu button and copy the pic to your clipboard. Finally, start a text message to someone, long press the text box and paste the pic. Send as normal!

Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
I experienced the same problem: while trying to text 8Mb pictures, it said "compressing file" then "format not supported", or something similar. I restarted the phone (by long pressing the power button, not a factory reset), and it let me send my picture. I am assuming this is a temporary fix, so if anyone finds a permanent fix, please post it. Thanks and good luck. I'm using the Samsung galaxy s3.

Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
I was having the same problem so I googled and found this thread. I bumped my camera down to 6 (from 8) and was able to send the pic. I've only had the phone for a week but have sent other pics, the only difference is that people I've sent them to have older Samsungs (Fascinates) - not sure if that makes a difference. Problem seems to be solved though, so I guess I'll deal with it for now.

Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
It's some glitch in the software or messaging app. To fix it you can either restart your phone or press and hold the menu button, select "Task Manager" and under "Active Application" find the Messaging app and hit end. When you relaunch it, it should allow you to send at least one picture without force closing it again.

Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
My wife's S3 has this issue off and on all the time. Some go thru perfect and then all of a sudden one decides "nah, I'm gonna give you issues". Tries to compress like it does others and then quits and says it can't attach. Frustrating that you have to restart or do anything differently to make this simple smartphone feature work on this phone. Its such a common task that every phone seems to handle without issues...except this one. Bug???? I'd love to call that number above, but is there a link that makes it easier to just click & report issues like this?

for some reason, people do not usually commute to work in an 18-wheeler semi...
the limitation is not on the provider's end, or the device.
it is the user.
have you ever sent a letter? have you ever sent a package with an item that whould not fit in the envelope (sweater/photo album/physical item of intrinsic worth)?
SMS is Simple Messaging Service, MMS is Multimedia Messaging Service. There IS a difference due to the technology.
carriers also impose limits on file sizes. send a 200mb file to an AT&T recipient, and you will fail. text (SMS) is capped and you will have a devil of a time getting an AT&T rep to say so, but it is a truth. when last working for vzw, att would accept sms at <100 kb.
mutter, mutter, curse and stutter...
when you have millions of people depending on you, and have set limitations imposed on you, you may well find that the limitaions of people's expectations far out-strip resources/technology/reason.
talk to (the shipping company of your choice) why you cannot send a car to your cousin in ohio for the same rate it would cost to send the title to the same vehicle...

^^^^
um...ok.
The point here is not that the pics get shrunk. That's normal. Its that there are errors in doing that process that don't happen with other top phones. So, sticking with the above post's theme, I guess you could say we are trying to send the vehicle title in the mail, not the car, but the mailman keeps eating our mail before it even makes it to the post office. - 08-20-2012, 02:34 PM #42

I randomly get this error as well. Does anyone know if the other Galaxy S3 phones are getting this error and if the Messaging Apps are interchangeable?? I have tried to switch with the default ICS app, but then couldn't access the settings in the messaging app..

Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
It's not an S3 thing...it's Verizon (and possibly other networks). Size limits on MMS attachments has always been there, it's just that cell phone cameras used to not be good enough to take pictures that challenged those limits.
Instead of MMS, just send as an email attachment. If the person you're sending to doesn't have a smartphone with email, then chances are they won't be able to download/view an 8MP pic over MMS anyway. - 08-22-2012, 02:55 AM #46
Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
Actually I think it's an S3 thing cuz my last 2 smartphones shrunk 8mb pics down and attached them to the text with no issues whatsoever. Remember, the error pops up before you hit send so the network isn't involved. Thus... It's an S3 thing.
Email works if u wanna send full size. But... it takes longer on both ends. - 08-22-2012, 09:27 AM #47
Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
Why I ask? Why send an 8mp photo via sms?
Whats next? "Why cant I send my 1GB 1080p video clip to my buddy via SMS?" - 08-22-2012, 09:43 AM #48
Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
well yeah. With the way Smartphones are going, they seem to be becoming primary devices in a way. so the idea is to send what you want directly to the person, not to a specific secondary system. "check your email!" "I put it on facebook" "I uploaded it to the company file server" no, give it to me directly. when you make contact with someone, do you share email, or phone numbers?
now right now sending a 1 GB video clip is ridiculous, but what's the point of pushing 'blazing fast 4G LTE" and the like if we're not going to make use of it as society? The software answer may be a provided-cached file (like dropbox?) and a prompt on the receiving end 'big file, want to download?' rather than locking up someone's phone downloading a huge message, but this sharing of information is not going away. I know it's _called_ Simple Messaging Service, but that's not the point. No one cares what it's called, they care about being able to share information. if SMS isn't getting it done, a new phone-phone protocol is needed. Maybe the solution is to have the phone itself interpret it and convert it to email. - 08-22-2012, 10:22 AM #49
Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
I don't think you understand the issue here. It's pretty simple. We take a picture, try to MMS it, the phone will compress it so it fits under the size limit. Nobody here wants to send a full size 8MP picture.
The problem is sometimes the phone will fail to compress it... you reboot, try to send the same picture and it will work. It's a bug in the phone.

Re: Verizon SG3:Cant send 8mp pics through text!?
Nobody is trying to "send an 8mp photo via sms" they are trying to take a picture and send it to somebody. It's something that happens a billion times a day. The average user doesn't know, or even care what MP their phone is set on.
The problem is the Samsung software is buggy and can randomly have troubles preparing photos to be sent.
