    Default GS III vs Rezound

I am a happy HTC Rezound owner, but have been intrigued by the S3. I used to own a Dinc, and upgraded to the Rezound in April. I like the smaller form factor, but love bigger screens. So the Rezound has been great. The S3 I thought would be too big, but it's VERY thin, especially compared to my Resound. I really like the screen cover, and have considered trading in my Rezound for an S3. Samsung is offering $220 for my Rezound on their website if I buy an S3. For some unjustifiable reason, I'm considering shelling out $600 for a S3 off contract but I need to justify why. Anyone have a good comparison? I am rooted and running an ICS leak on my Rezound, so ICS is not my reason for thinking of going to an S3. I've been a big fan of Sense as well, so I'm curious if I'd be happy with Samsung, but the battery life difference is huge.

You know honestly, I don't think it would be worth it. It's a great phone and everything, but it's still $380 after trading your Rezound. The S3 doesn't take a whole lot better pics than the Rezound, and there isn't a huge difference in the screen. The S3 is a little faster, and it has bigger battery, but none of this stuff is worth $380. I would just buy an extra battery, and be happy with what you have. It is your money though, so do what ever you want.

Edit: Oh, and you can't forget tax!

They're not even in the same league, IMHO. I like my Rezound just fine, but the only thing I can think of that's better in any way is the camera--I'm having a bit of trouble with my GS3 camera.
I'm not sure I'd shell out 600 bucks for a GS3 off contract, but it is unquestionably the better phone.

I had the rezound and though it was a decent phone, I love the SGS3!!!!!! I had a lot of dropped data and the rezound sucked at switching from 4G to 3G! The camera.... I think the S3 is WAY better! I have 3 kids and use the camera a lot. The rezound had a great camera but the S3 is much brighter and seems clearer!
Only thing I miss on the rezound is the sense keyboard!
To me No longer having data drops and a cleaner faster switch between 4g and 3G is worth it! But spending that much is really something you have to think about, I would wait for an upgrade and get the next best thing then! (I had an upgrade on one of our lines)

I'll have to agree with everyone else. I'm coming from the Rezound and although that phone is a great phone, I am glad I picked up the GSIII. This thing is better in almost every way. I feel like I was kinda getting bored with HTC Sense and needed a change. The development on the Rezound was kinda going nowhere as well. The GSIII not only looks impressive with the slim design and 4.8in screen, but is unbelievably fast, feels great in the hand and offers enough new things to keep me satisfied for a long time. Best phone I've ever had for sure. And I'm sure in a year there will be something even better that I will hop on.

And if you don't want to spend $600, here's what I did. Sold my Rezound on Ebay for $285. Then added a line to my plan for $10/month (240 over 2 years) which allowed me to get the GSIII for $200. I then put an old flip phone on the new line and the GSIII on my line. That way you don't pay data on the new line. Also kept my unlimited plan. So 200 + 240 = 480. Minus whatever you get for your phone. This saves you at least $120.

you will have to pay tax on the flip phone line, which for me, is around $4/mo. Tax will vary depending on where you are. If you don't have a physical phone, you can tell verizon to put a Phantom line (no physical phone).

I came from a Rezound and Im very happy with my S3. Ill list why its better to me.

    1. The Screen is signifantly larger. Thats a big plus for me

    2. The S3 displays colors in a way the Rezound just could not acheive with its LCD screen.

    2. The phone is thinner and lighter

    3. Its arguably a much more attractive design

    4. That all being said, this is the most important one. I had ICS on my Rezound, the S3 is just simply faster in everyway with no fiddling.

This is the phone that feels like, I have the cutting egde...Android feels right. This is a phone I have no problem recommending, EVEN to isheeps.

Still the Rezound is a solid device.

I don't want to switch plans, I'm keeping my unlimited. You are saying they will let me add the line to my current plan WITHOUT having to adopt a share plan? I do have extra old phones, in fact I just upgraded the two dumb lines I had (in laws phones) because they have been using the same phones for about 4-5 years. We kept taking their upgrades . Anyway, with the shared plan crap, I figured I'd get them new subsidized phones before the deadline. They should be good for another 4-5 years on those

Here's the catch with adding a line. It's actually $14.38 after all taxes and fees. So take 14.38 x 24 and that's $345.12 + $200 for the GS3, and that's only $54.88 savings over just paying full retail. It's less upfront, but really close to same amount. A friend and work broke her iPhone and did this, and I tired to tell her just to buy a new one she really wouldn't save that much, but she didn't have $600 to shell out now, so it worked for her.

I don't know if I am going to do it, but I am intrigued. Also the Rezound development community seems to be picking back up since S-off isn't necessary for Rom with the Aroma installer, and the boot loader can be unlocked unlike the S3. Maybe I can search for a used one....who knows. Thanks for all the opinions here.

you may be having a problem with the Rezound. Almost everyone that has the Rezound has had good luck with signal. Perhaps you had a defective phone and/or sim. Either way, Verizon will replace either for free, and may even allow you to switch to another phone as a warranty replacement (ymmv of course).

correct, you can add a line if you already currently have a legacy family plan, and do not need to switch to share everything.

With regard to your original question, if I were in your shoes, and the Rezound was working fine for you now, then I would not upgrade to the gs3. Yes, the screen is larger, battery is better, runs smoother. I paid $200 on upgrade for it just to keep unlimited data. But if unlimited data weren't in the equation, then i would not upgrade now since although the gs3 is better, imo, it isn't really worth $600 if you already have a Rezound. I would rather wait for the upcoming HTC quad core Krait 5" 1080 display.

I considered waiting and I'm not unhappy with my Rezound. I just figure now is the time it is worth the most, will only lose value. The GS3 is truly awesome in my mind. I have been largely underwhelmed by the original S and S2. I like how thin it is (on top of all the specs) and the footprint when put face to face with my rezound is really not that much bigger.

Unlike a Previous poster, I DO like that it is an extremely popular and well sold phone. I don't care about being like everyone else or conforming, but I do like finding accessories for my devices, and 3rd party makers of accessories don't make lots of products for device that aren't very popular.

In playing with the phone (blue is my preference) the camera I liked better....and I have sworn by HTC's cameras. I would probably miss sense, but seeing that I rom'ed the heck out of my last phone, and went senseless for a while, it won't break me. I truly like it better, and I just need to decide if it's worth the money. In the end it's always about money in this world huh?

It was fine at first and the longer I had the worse it would get. I talked to Verizon and they said it was a common problem for 4G phones as regards to dropped data. Though I think it was the rezound in general! I was on the rezound forum for months and it was actually a common complaint at first! Then it seems everyone just got used to it.
I even got a new sim cause I activated my old droid x cause it annoyed me and didn't realize it voided out the sim card, so when I switched back because I couldn't handle the slower pone I got new sim!

So long time reader, first time post.
This seems like the perfect thread. I've been thinking about the $220 trade in offer for my rezound from Samsung to get the GS3. So with the above post of adding a line and adding a dumb phone on afterwards, I have some questions.
I have the old family plan with 1 rezound and 3 dumb phones. I still have unlimited data on my line. 2 of the dumb lines have an upgrade available. I could transfer the upgrade to my line and get the GS3 for $200. Then I believe that I would have to change to a tiered data plan.
What about if I were upgrade the dumb line to the GS3 and then take that phone for myself and put the dumb phone back on?
What happens when you change the GS3 back to my line?
I would still be able to keep the unlimited data right?
It seems like you can cancel the data plan on that dumb line, but wasn't that part of the contract to get the phone for $200? Is there some kind of breach? Thanks and hope this makes some sense.

you'd be fine. upgrade on your dumb phone line, then switch phones. the data charge is dependent on phone not on where you got it. you could buy a gs3 at full retail and would still have to pay for a data plan.

I almost bought it yesterday. Then I decided to think it over again. I DO NOT want a phone with a locked bootloader. Other than I think Moto builds crap, they lock the bootloaders and I will never go that route. Then I thought about waiting for the developer edition. Again, reading the forums on XDA, I agree that it is just a tax on development...and defeats the purpose of development on these phones, and AOSP in general. So the only conclusion for me is to urge others who like to tinker to NEVER buy or develop on a locked phone. If people stopped buying the S3 on Verizon because it was locked, Samsung may not agree to lock it next time. Companies only care about sales and $, and if we stop their sales, they will have to change and sell us what they want.

Of course this is a pipe dream, because most users don't customize their device this way, but I will stick to this principle. I do not want to rely on carrier updates, so I won't buy a locked up device. If I did, I'd still be on GB with my rezound instead of ICS. Love the GS3, but not paying to support VZW bogus practices.

    dpham00,
So cancelling the data plan would not be affected by the ETF? It would only be affected if I cancelled the line? Do you know how long I should wait if I were to upgrade the dumb phone line and then switch the GS3 over? Thanks.

Assuming you're purchasing form Verizon, you can switch it the same day. Some third party retailers online have terms preventing device switches within the first 6 months though.

No etf if bought from verizon, if bought from third party, depends on terms. Can switch immediately. No issues with changing data plan on basic phone.

Correct. Cancelling the data plan is fine but cancelling the line will result in an ETF. As for waiting, maybe wait 24 hours just in case.

    Sounds good,
Anybody else have any experience with the 2 phones, I've been reading some other posts elsewhere about how the radios are not as good as the Rezound, but some people report that it is the same. Oh well, I guess I'll have to try. I bought the Rezound due to the smaller size compared to the Razr and Nexus and some reports that it has better reception than those two. I'm ready to go large though...
