Very Unusual Issue - GS3 Replaced under Warranty
After activating a used Verizon Galaxy S3 this morning I walked out of the store a happy man with the big beautiful phone in hand. That is until I attempted to send a text message and place a call. Text messages would not even send and any time a call was placed it would go directly to an automated Verizon voice service. Funny thing is data worked with no problems whatsoever (which is most likely why Verizon rep didn't catch the issue since activation occurs over data). Before I panicked I immediately jumped on a landline and called Verizon tech support. Spent over an hour on the phone while performing everything from soft resets to pulling SIM and battery with no luck. Tech insisted I go back to store and have the rep replace SIM. A SIM replacement did not work whatsoever. The rep then spent another hour and a half going through the motions with corporate tech support before it was determined something was not right with the phone. This is the first occurrence of this at the Verizon store and to the knowledge of corporate techs. Figured I would open this thread up as I have been combing through the net and found no similar occurrences. Has anyone else heard of this happening? Thankfully I will make attempt number two tomorrow when my new one comes overnight delivery.

I had similar issues with mine and the in store person relaced the sim three times before he found one that worked. He said that he had to do that two other times. Bad sims not bad phones. Mine now preforms flawlessly.

That means your launcher is having issues and not working properly. I would recommend that you clear your RAM and reboot your device. If that doesn't work do a battery pull while device is on. If that doesn't work, try a factory reset in settings (if you can access it). If all else fails, go to a Verizon store, you might have a problem. Did you recently do the OTA?

Re: Very Unusual Issue - GS3 Replaced under Warranty
It updated automatically the other day, I just got the device and had the Thunderbolt previously. I really enjoy this phone, but I just wasn't sure about what that issue was. I will try all those short of the factory reset if I can help it. I hate doing that if the problem can be fixed other ways, and that always seems to be VZW's answer to everything and I don't agree with it. Is it tied into the OTA update?
