Double texts?

I have used Handcent, Go SMS, and the stock messaging app and I always get double texts from others. Mine only sends one message to them, but I always get two back, no matter what app I use...is there any way to fix this? Not a life threatening condition but it sure is annoying.

Is it ALWAYS double texts?

I sometimes see double texts incoming when I'm in a fringe service area..like the tower never got the ack from my phone that I received the message so it resends it. (or something along those lines)

I have had that problem with my Rezound and Galaxy Nexus. Both sending and receiving. Never could figure it out. Stopped with my GS3

Yes, it's always. Wifi, 4g, it doesn't matter.

Are these 'others' on iPhones by any chance? I've seen other threads about strange behaviour there.
Are they on your carrier?
Anyway, I occasionally have that problem (happened twice today as a matter of fact), but it doesn't happen ALL the time. It's infrequent enough that I just ignore it. I'm using the stock Messaging app, and it seems to happen most often when I'm actually in a thread with someone that sends a reply while I'm reading a previous message - if I'm in a different thread or not in the app at all it doesn't happen as often. Definitely happens to me with others that are on the same carrier.

I have had this happen from time to time. Usually when texting with my wife (on an Iphone 4s). It happens infrequently in my case as well maybe once a week. I have also had it send me a really old text completely out of context from a month or more back.

Using the stock messaging app as well. Doesn't happen often enough to make me go crazy and haven't found a specific cause either... Sorry.

This is a difficult one to nail down for me too. It used to happen on my Bionic, never before my Bionic, but it was only some times. Likewise with my GS3. It happens in 3G, 4G, WiFi. I thought for a while it was only iPhone people too, but it isn't, my brother is on a Bionic right now and he double hits me constantly. My mother's Blackberry does too. Not always though for either of them. Some iphones seem to do it more than others, but it is very rare that my dad (iPhone user) hits me with a double text.

This one, the best guess I have put together is that it happens while switching towers for either them (which is a random guess) as it might just hit a tower, upload or download, but not be able to also hit back with the "I uploaded this already" or "downloaded already" signal that stops it from sending again or receiving again.

HOWEVER, if you believe that one we can talk about the bridge I have for sale in Arizona. Poor Arizona transportation folks, there probably isn't a single engineer in Arizona that can actually propose and sell a bridge there because everyone thinks they are getting a raw deal...

If you use a third party app: Settings > Application Manager > All > Messaging > Force Stop then Disable. This will turn off the built in messaging and no more double texts.

As far as the stock app goes, take a peek in the Application Manager and just ensure you don't have something funky like it got installed twice or something. Are you running stock or a custom rom?

Had the same problem until I went into the settings of the native message app and turned off notifications. Now I only receive notifications from the message app I am using (handscent)

I am getting double texts within all messaging apps, stock, Go SMS, etc.
