Hi everyone, I'm new here. But I've read here for quite a while and it seems like a great community so I figured I'd pose a question.

I MEANT to write that the PHONE shuts off when I use the stock camera's flash, NOT what's in the title, sorry, typo..

When I use my stock camera's flash it shuts my phone off and I have to do a battery pull. Any ideas what the problem may be? I've tried researching it but have come up with no answer yet..Thanks in advance!

Also, do any of you know a Android equal to the IOS app 'Snapseed' , I've searched high and low, I loved the options that app gave like 'black diffusion and soft focus', it was a picture editing app,
Thanks again!

I haven't heard of a problem like this. You could try clearing the camera settings (Menu -> Manage apps -> All -> Camera, Clear data). If that doesn't help, try a different camera app from the Play Store (ex. https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...neilandtheresa.VignetteNewDemo&token=KL0k-wqB). If the same thing happens then I'd suggest a factory reset. That would be the last resort before getting your hardware exchanged.
It actually sounds like a battery/hardware problem, but without another battery to try there's no easy way to tell. You could try plugging the phone into a charger, then take a picture and see what happens.

As far as photo capture customization/editing goes, take a look at these and I'm sure you'll find something that is along the lines of what you're looking for. Note that some of the links are to the paid version of the app, but in most cases there are free versions that you can try.

Hmm, well then a factory reset may be your only option - sounds like something is hosed in the stock application.
Do you have the latest OTAs installed?

I am current on the OTA's but the weird thing is it does it on my wife's S3 too. And hers as well as mine came from the Verizon store, albeit different days. But not from a secondhand source. Weird

I'm curious - when you say that 'it shuts your phone off' - exactly what is happening? Does the screen go black? Have you tried pressing the Home button as well as the Power button? What about the Back button?
I only ask because I've encountered behaviour before where the screen goes completely black and turning it off/on with the Power button left it in that same state, but the phone was actually on and pressing the Back button took me right back to where I was.
It's just too strange that both you and your wife are having the same problem - almost like something got loaded on them that's causing this, which is why I want to be sure you've tried the other buttons.

My Galaxy screen goes black, and can be made better by pushing the home button. However it doesn't go back to the camera I'm using, and doesn't save the picture I just took. It reboots the system. When the pic is being taken, there is a sound like the shutter sound for the camera can't complete the action. Hpwever when there is no flash, the pic works fine. Also after I plugged it in and took the pic, it worked fine. The only thing I can think of is that there wasn't enough batter power (little more then 15%) to complete the action of taking a picture with a falsh. Don't know if this helps anyone else, or if anyone has any thoughts but this is my thinking.

My phone does the same thing. I've called Samsung and T-Mobile and they said there was probably something wrong with the phone. Tmobile sent me a new one and I still randomly have the same problem. I go to take a picture, the phone shuts off completely and I have to pull the battery. This has happened on TWO SEPARATE HANDSETS. Of course it always happens when I need the phone to work. When I use instagram, it 99% of the time it works, but I have had it shut down on instagram then too. I initially thought it was the battery, however that theory was broken when I did it on a battery charge that was 87%.

is this a widespread enough problem? i use the camera a lot and i'm thinking of getting this in a few weeks. a phone that shuts off when using camera is a deal breaker.

I had this happen to my S3. Clearing the data as GSDer said in post 3 above did the trick, but I had to reboot the phone after clearing the data. Either way, it is fixed.

This happens to me too. Not every time but more often than not, and I have not systematically investigated the conditions that make it happen. Others on the web have suggested that it only happens when the battery is about 1/3 charged.

The camera app works fine when the flash is turned off. As soon as I use the flash, the S3 goes completely dead and I have to disconnect the battery before I can re-start.

Any fixes?

To start with, what is the state of your battery when this problem occurs? You've already noted that others are reporting this behavior when the battery level drops below a certain point - it would be rather silly to ignore the data points that they've provided.
Perhaps you should try using the flash at different charge levels to see where things go south. Then decide if it's worth the cost of a replacement battery to correct the problem. You could go with something like http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AKZWGAC...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU2989088 and not worry about the problem cropping up again.

I had this problem and in my case was the battery problem. See, the battery sometimes sends wrong info to the system. In my case it was indicating that I had about 40% battery. I used the camera with flash and it immediately turned off. Happened several times. But after the last restart, battery was telling me that it was critically low. This means it was low before and not 40% and when battery is low you cant use flash so I think thats the reason it shuts down the phone.
