I recently updated to the new version of SwiftKey that includes emoji, but I've noticed that they are not in color. I did some searches on black and white emoji, and this is apparently only available on Android 4.1+. Since this device is running Android 4.3 though, I don't understand why I'm only seeing black and white emoji.

Have others encountered this issue? If so, were you able to resolve it?

    Thanks!

Thanks. Just to clarify, you're on Android 4.4.2?

I think I've figured out the answer. It looks like emoji is still black and white on Android 4.3. From SwiftKey's website:

"Some of you have asked us why emoji look different depending on what you’re doing. In short, what you see varies between different versions of Android and different apps. Emoji are only supported on Android Jellybean and KitKat (4.1 and later). SwiftKey uses the system emoji font which is black and white in Jellybean and colour in KitKat but some apps (eg WhatsApp) render the emoji within messages with app-specific fonts whereas Google Hangouts uses the same colour emoji font as KitKat. This means that although the meaning remains the same, the actual images may vary between apps and between the sending and receiving device. We hope that helps!"

Don't know if carrier makes a difference. My T-Mobile T999 with the new SwiftKey is showing colored emojis.

It apparently also depends on what app you're using. For example, hangouts has color emoji regardless of what version of Android you're using. I guess it's an app-specific, versus keyboard-level implementation thing.

Instead of SwiftKey, I downloaded Emoji Keyboard Pro for my Galaxy S3 and it works like a charm and all the emojis are in color.
