BBM - "Setting up BBM" taking forever?

Purely ignorant here but what is the big deal with BBM? Why does anybody want or need it?
I used it back in the day when I actually had a BB but at this point not sure what the big deal is.
With text, email, Hangouts, Whatsapp, Google+, etc....doesn't appear that their is a shortage of methods that already do the same thing.
Not to mention BBM requiring people to "sign up"......???
