why did they not keep the red back?

I'm not sure if I'm reading the OP correctly but if you mean what I think you mean the back was never red. One of the promotional pictures of the Vigor(Rezound) showed it with a red and black hard case on the back. If that's the pic you are talking about yes it was very cool looking and I have been planing on buying it before I even got the phone but it's been out of stock everywhere I've seen it so far. Is the pic below the one you were thinking of?

This. The back was never going to be red. The only thing that has changed since we first saw the device is the presence of a Beats logo.

Ok, first off thats a press shot of it wearing a custom case by HTC, it was NEVER going to be red, it was NEVER leaked as red, the only difference is the ReZound has the red accents that were originally leaked as silver speaker grill and regular buttons. the ReZound looks nicer than the international variant that will soon be announced for Europe and other regions.

The reason the press shot hit the web is because it was the only one that showed the true look of the ReZound until the announcement came.
