micro usb question

So it does not appear that the micro usb male end of the supplied power cord is a universal micro. WTF?

I have been really happy with my Rezound for a month or so that I have had it. I just received the Monoprice MHL to HDMI adapter and it does not take the dang HTC micro male end into the adapter female micro.

Further examination shows a squarish HTC male end. Why in the world would they do this? I am ticked (momentarily anyway).

Regular micro USB chargers fit in the phone fine. I believe I read where it can be used as a HDMI out to your TV as well as the standard micro USB. I charged one with a standard micro USB today and transferred data on the same standard cable.

that is true. But I do not seem to be able to plug the htc male end into a female universal micro usb. That is a big deal if you purchase a micro usb adapter and it does not go in. Game over, send the adapter back and now you need to purchase an HTC proprietary product built to accept the convoluted HTC male micro usb.

So don't buy any type of universal micro adapter because it will not accept the danged male htc micro. Grrrr.

I must be missing something. You shouldn't need the stock HTC cable to use the MHL to HDMI adapter. Doesn't the adapter plug straight into the phone and then you plug a HDMI cable from the TV to the adapter?

Yes and no. The adapter connects to the TV via a female HDMI port out the adapter and you then use your basic male to male HDMI cable and are good to go. But in order to charge your phone as it sends what is on the phone to the TV there is an additional female micro port on the side of the adapter.

This port is for your charger but it does not work as the stock HTC male micro usb is of a different configuration than that of a universal male micro. The phone itself accepts the male universal micro usb which the adapter has but the adapter does not accept the HTC male micro so it is worthless as it can't be charged during TV use, which is one of the main points of this adapter.

The point is you need to purchase the proprietary HTC adapter and not one from an after market supplier as the HTC supplied charging cable which unplugs from the AC adapter is not a universal type male end.

Oh I gotcha. Instead of sending it back, how about buying a cheap micro usb cable to charge with?

+1 to this recommendation. plenty of cheap working micro USB cables out on amazon.

This needs to go into my wall adapter so it will have usb male on one end and male micro usb on the other to go into my purchased adapter.

Now to find one.Thanks again.

I recommend to others to purchase the adapter from htcpedia. The cable from Monoprice is excellent and price was great. I will let them know about the adapter problem.

One has to take extreme caution not to damage the USB port inside the phone. My son jerked his cord too many times and, one day, found that he could no longer charge the phone. A tech at the store told him that the port can't be replaced and he should just through his phone away. Ever since, I'm very worried every time using this damn port.

As far as charging goes, I use standard USB cables with the standard micro plug on the end. I'm currently using the one AC adapter and cable that came with my OG Droid. I've also used monoprice cables for charging both from AC adapters and USB ports on computers.

This is a good thing to keep in mind. I always plugged and unplugged cables gently to/from my OG Droid, but over time the port became unusable.

there's a chance they may cover it under warranty.

or you can get the inductive cover and pad and charge it inductively. the cheapest route would be to use the external battery charger from the tb which is $5 shipped from Verizon. but, of course, that can be a pain to pull the battery everytime you need to charge.

For the life of me, I don't understand why the HTC switch from micro to mini (or is that the other way around?), other than to make people buy proprietary chargers. I happen to use one kind when charging and another when syncing with my PC, and I'm afraid it's exactly this switching back and forth that, eventually, will do my phone in.

That's basically what I did with my OG Droid. I bought an external charger and swapped batteries (I had multiple).

FYI a standard us (micro) will fit you just have to flip the connector. At least on all of my USB cable that i have used with my old Palm Pre. I flip them upside down and it charges and fit just fine.

A mini usb won't work. This is a proprietary or at least non standard connector, but it is compatible with micro usb.

To provide an update for you guys. Today I tried the Monoprice MHL to HDMI adapter that I have been talking about here. I bought a standard Rocket Fish USB to micro so I could attach to the adapter and it charges just fine plugged into the wall as well as having the adapter plugged into my Rezound.

Unfortunately no signal makes it to my TV. I am thinking there is more to the weird micro port on the Rezound than meets the eye. Looks like I will need to purchase the much more expensive HTC MHL to HDMI from htcpedia and send the one back to Monoprice. By the way Monoprice has been great about this and seem like a great outfit for cables etc. Prices are outstanding as is quality on cables.

Is there a setting on my Rezound that might be preventing the phone image from transmitting to the TV?

I looked at the Rezound in the store today and they were using the standard security attachment that uses a universal micro usb connector and it had the worst fit. I can see that cable shorting out some pins very quickly. The ***** salesman wouldn't verify if the OEM cable was universal or not so that answers that. Probably why he wouldn't say either.

Why can't they just have an hdmi port, a usb port, and be done with it. Why try to re-invent the freaking wheel?

I know on my incredible, though I never used it, I had to change an option for the tv out. Maybe it's just not enabled in your options?

I ordered the Monoprice adapters when we bought 2 Galaxy Nexus phones last week - we returned both phones after a weekend of no signal problems and bought the Rezounds - the Monoprice adapters arrived and I thought I would try them in the phone and they worked perfectly - sending every single screen image on the Rezound to the TV - I have the adapter directly into the Rezound micro USB, the micro USB power wire plugged into the side of adapter to charge (note - I too did not have any picture on TV until I plugged in this micro USB to the side adapter input to charge) and then the HDMI from adapter to TV HDMI input - picture came on immediately. We tried a whole host of things - photos, videos, music - all displayed.

P.S. I am using all the same Monoprice (different lengths) micro USB cables I've been using for the last couple of years with my original Droid with no problems.

Can someone please explain the difference between the usb cable that was packaged with the Rezound and a usb cable that comes with a micro usb tip, besides physically being different is their anything else? Does one charge faster? Does one transfer data faster?

Should be the same, function wise.
