Default GPS Tracking Issue - Bug - Glitch

I've searched here but did not find any reports of the Rezound's GPS being buggy. JogTracker Pro and Endomondo Pro both are recording erroneous distances that average roughly about 0.25 mile more than the actual distance. For instance, after I have walked approximately 0.75 mile, both programs will record that I have walked 1.0 mile, give or take twenty or so feet. It varies each time.

The error is cumulative too. My normal walking distance is about 4.6 to 4.7 miles. The programs show a total distance anywhere from 6.6 to 7.2 miles. The maps generated by the programs also show irregular intervals of erroneous reads no where near the walking course. Sorta like running from home base to first base to second base to center field then to third base and then home. Crude example!

My previous phone was a Droid2 which I still have. Endomondo Pro worked fine on it but I did not purchase JogTracker Pro until after I upgraded to the Rezound. I have repeatedly measured my walking course with my truck and also with aerial photo so I know what the distances should be.

I also ran a track while driving a short ways through town today. The same behavior was shown.

Having the same problem with the app RunKeeper. This was a walk around the block

Anyone have any idea how to fix or who to talk to about this?

Exactly! This pix is from yesterday.

Edit -- I included two more images. The second one is from Endomondo and recorded at the same time as the first image from JogTracker. The third map is from Endomondo of the same course but when I was using my Droid2 two days before ugrading to the Rezound.

I could post two that look just like those from Jimbo. My wife has a droid X and I have a rezound. I had this problem and requested a replacement. I got a refurb one a couple days ago. It has the same problem. I like the phone for everything else, but this might be a deal breaker. I'd love to hear from someone it does work for.

there must be a GPS bug from the new update, becuse today while drivig around town, the clock/weather app on the home screen was switching citys correctly, untill i looked at it again and it said it was 11:20am, and the city was Honolulu.
Im in Dallas/ Fort worth, TX area, so no where near Hawaii and it was closer to 3 or 4pm. Even opening the weather app and hitting refresh did nothing, i had to restart my phone and seemed to fix it.

I use JogTracker and on a pretty straight line walk, JogTracker showed 3.89 miles and MapMyWalk showed 3.88 miles, I will try it today with my pedometer which over the years I have calibrated pretty accuratly. I just updated so will try the same straight line route today and see if it comes out the same.

Update: Did the same route this morning post OTA JogTracker 3.90 MapMyWalk 3.88, checked with my car and it was 3.85 +/- 100'.
Did another trip in car 3.6 miles on JogTracker, 3.6 miles on MayMyWalk and 3.5 on vehicle. So I'm clueless now, I think JogTracker and MapMyWalk both use Google Maps so that is probably why those two come up the same or fairly close. Can't check pedometer, too much snow.

Thanks for the reply Glfman. looks like it is working for you. I tried Jogtracker and it gave me the same type of readings that run keeper did. Like a 3.88 mile walk could have been close to 5. maybe i should request another phone.

It's more than likely that the app doesn't play well with the Rezound rather than a GPS bug. I use GPS a lot as I travel a good deal and have never had an issue with it. Try to keep in mind that all Android apps are not created equally for every phone.

I finally figured out what is causing the problem but I don't know why. The problem is with the aGPS cache.

Use a GPS utility program and set it to NOT automatically download GPS data when the utility program starts. Exit and then restart it. Clear the aGPS cache and immediately exit the program. (I used GPS Test but there are many utility programs out there). Then run JogTracker, Endomondo or whatever program you use for tracking your walks, runs, hikes, etc.

This forces the tracking program's connection to the GPS service to do a 'cold' start when the tracking program begins instead of relying upon the cached aGPS data. It will take about thirty seconds or so, maybe longer, but it will eventually lock on to enough GPS satellites in order to track.

I have tested this several times with the cache containing data and with it being cleared, the results are the same. The tracking programs will record an erratic track if the aGPS cache contains data upon startup even if the cache data is only a day old. With the cache cleared the programs perform flawlessly.

I have not noticed this glitch when tracking a route in a fast moving vehicle. I have not ridden a bike doing this so I can't vouch for that. I can easily duplicate this error when recording a 'slow' velocity track and not having the aGPS cache cleared using any of the tracking programs. I have even started tracking without clearing the cache and letting it track until I see the glitches appear on the tracking map. I exit the program, clear the cache and restart the tracking program. Perfect tracks every time. Go figure.

Great investigation. Sounds like something you should tell HTC about.

I have reported this to both HTC and Verizon. I will post what replies I receive. I noticed this before the OTA so that had no effect.

I've been using Cardiotrainer for over a year with my HTC Incredible and now my Rezound. I've got the same location services set on my phones and am using the same CardioTrainer GPS settings. I have a Garmin watch (forerunner 305) and the Incredible and the Garmin always tracked my runs within 0.10 miles of each other.

The other night I ran 6.5 miles according to my Garmin but the Rezound / CardioTrainer was 0.25 SHORT AT 6.25 miles.

Well I just tried a short bike ride today and took all 3 devices with me, the Garmin, my old Incredible (gps service, but no cell service) and my new Rezound. Here's what I got:

    Garmin - 4.09 miles
    Incredible - 4.04 miles
    Rezound - 4.55 miles

So in two work outs, my Rezound was .25 SHORT and 0.45 miles long vs my Garmin. The Incredible was predictably slightly short of my Garmin which has been typical, but always well within 0.10 miles if not a lot better.

I'm going to try the fix above to see if it helps. Otherwise to the Verizon store I go...

You should report this data to them when you go.

Anyone try this fix with Runkeeper? I just bought the Rezound, love it except for this...and if this doesn't get fix the phone is going back.

This was a straight walk along the road, look at all those crazy jags - reporting almost double the actual distance.

I am seeing the same issue. Will be posting on the HTC forums soon, looks like some folks reporting temporary success using an gps status app to clear the agps data

I can verify that I did use the GPS Status app to clear the cache, and have never had to do it again. I've used CardioTrainer, Endomondo and Garmin Fit. And I have used the apps in different areas including cities 3 hours from home. I am no longer getting those jagged crazy data points. Just follow the fix posted in the htc forums.

There must've been some kind of glitch with the factory settings.

Once you do apply this fix, I also recommend checking gps settings in your tracking apps. I use the second strongest setting for GPS Filtering in GPS Status and CardioTrainer. I also set CardioTrainer on the highest GPS frequency setting (1 second.)
