Re: New ICS Rumor
I got so tired of all these false rumors, I just went ahead and loaded up Scott's ICS CleanRom after the Best Buy rumor a few weeks ago. Been running ICS flawlessly for the last two weeks on my Rezound. Nice and smooth.. almost like vanilla ICS with the Apex launcher and a few other tweaks. I just couldn't wait anymore. Glad I didn't. When the official releases, I'll just load up Scott's version of that one as well since I prefer his performance and battery tweaks. <sleeping like a baby tonight>

Pictures look very convincing. I am skeptical but still hoping that it's true.

Re: New ICS Rumor
The size in MB they list is not possible to be ICS. Most all of the custom ones based off of the leak were closer to 500mb.

Re: New ICS Rumor
Couldn't the file size be smaller on an update to ICS vs. a custom ROM? I don't think the ICS update would need to include any of the assets that are already on the phone (wallpapers, icons, pre-installed bloatware, etc.). It only needs to include assets that are being updated. On a custom ROM however, your starting from scratch, so you have to include every asset the phone needs.
I'm not a developer so I don't really know what I'm talking about, I'm just trying to make an educated guess.

Re: New ICS Rumor
And to go along with that thought...a full ICS ROM (Cyanogenmod or Kangs) runs about 116-120mb with the google apps (market, etc) running about 50mb for my HP Touchpad. Assuming the Rezound OTA indeed does not need a separate google apps install or will not wipe and replace everything on the device it seems possible. I have just recently gotten my Rezound and not looked much into rooting yet (lack of S-OFF and possible impending ICS official have me waiting) but are custom roms for this phone really about 500mb in size? Makes me wonder why there is such a huge difference between the tablet version of ICS (like on my Touchpad) and one that is installed on a phone? - 04-20-2012, 12:11 PM #13
Re: New ICS Rumor
Standard ICS ROMs (AOSP) run about 200MB or less.
ICS ROMs (Sense) run about 500-600MB
ICS ROMs (DeSensed) run about 300MB
Notice how much Sense adds on? Another part of this is that most if not all of the Rezound ROMs are full ROMs which will be bigger than an upgrade ROM. When I pulled the image of one of the previous leaks, it was a little over 1GB. That should show you how disproportionate things are.“Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long.

Re: New ICS Rumor
Rooting is not a scary process (despite all the WARNING< THIS COULD DAMGE YOUR PHONE!) most likely if you mess something up, you just will have failed to root it. If you can follow directions, rooting is very easy....even if you have a mac like me, But I know the feeling. Rooting just opens doors to do some cool things you couldn't otherwise do.
Now flashing new roms like an ICS rom, that is another process that requires root. Root is a plus and a minus in my opinion. Mostly I root for the ability to completely backup and restore anything on my device....with ease of an app Titanium backup. I see Root as a minus, because I feel this is something Android should be able to do without the need for rooting. I could do it on my blackberry 2 years ago, and you can do it on the iPhone. I don't like not being able to do it on android without root, but such is life. But in saying all that I will gladly root and stick with a superior system and ecosystem.
As for the ICS rumors, I used to get caught up in the Froyo and then the GB rumors for the Dinc. I've learned to be patient. Updates don't always make things better. Unless there is a feature ICS offers over GB (other than it being new and cool), It's usually worth the wait (as long as the wait was because they're trying to get all bugs out of it). I'm only impatient for the release of ICS because I want my phone S-off, and that won't happen till ICS is released.Devices:
Rooted HTC Droid Incredible
Rooted Nook Color
Rooted HTC Rezound
Soon to be rooted Galaxy S4 - 04-23-2012, 10:21 AM #22
Re: New ICS Rumor
The process of rooting may not be scary to some, but many might have concerns due to the inherent security issue rooting your device presents. The primary reason i have yet to root my Rezound at this point, is due to the fact my company will no longer support it and allow me to connect to my exchange server if rooted. There are definitely legitimate concerns regarding errant apps, and their ability to exploit rooted devices. Granted, a lot of that is education and being careful with what you download, but no one is perfect. The fact is, for some people, rooting really isn't an option :-/

Re: New ICS Rumor
Mine isn't...but neither am I. Think of it this way. You're doing them a favor by being chained to the business beyond 9-5(or whatever your hours are). The least they could do is compensate you for it. That's the only thing about the BYOD revolution I don't agree with. That companies expect you to use your hard earned tech for work....and not be in control of it.
