First off, I am sorry for being such a noob...

I rooted my brand new thunderbolt and it was my first time rooting a phone. I used the "Revolutionary" method from a YouTube video. Wow, that was easy!

Now my phone is caught in a constant cycle because of what I am assuming is a new OTA update from Verizon...So, I think to myself, ok well I will just unroot.

Well, the problem is, I cannot keep the phone on long enough to do anything as it keeps restarting and trying to install the update which then fails.

My need for assistance is because I currently have an unusable phone. Well, sort of. I can access Clockwork Mod Recovery - so I can still get to the guts. I read the thread about if you have a rooted phone, do not install the new update. Roger that. So I install a custom ROM (not sure how, maybe mount as disk and install zip from sd card?" but then I keep reading about "radios" and I have no clue what those are....

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO SO I CAN USE MY PHONE.

Thank you,

nsz

I would unroot, I suppose. Check out this guide:
[RS Guide] How Return to Stock from Revolutionary Root

If you are having trouble keeping your phone on long enough, hold down the volume down and power to get into bootloader, then get to fastboot manually.

That guide flashes back the non-revolutionary bootloader, so then you can flash the full RUU found here:
[RUU/ROM] Final Gingerbread OTA Build 2.11.605.5 (Untouched and Rooted versions) - xda-developers

Hope that helps.

You may try to get to the stock recovery first and try wiping data and cache. What you described is a bootloop.

Edit: I just read more of your post, since you can get into clockwork, I would take the sd card out and download a custom rom and manually put it on the sd card. Then boot into clockwork recovery and install the rom (wiping data/cache of course) and bingo. There are lots of stock roms if you prefer and they are already off the new updated base software so you won't have any issues with verizon and updating.

As for the radios, it is as simple as downloading the most current radio found here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/188-romkernelradio-list-the-official-thunderbolt-roms-list-v30-09112011/
rename it to "PG05IMG.zip" and place it on the root of the sd card, then boot into bootloader using the volume down and it will update automatically.

Nandroid backup after following that guy's advice. That will help you you easily recover after future rogue updates. I usually nandroid every week or so to catch any changes I've made and delete the old one.

I had this problem. The OTA update will not work if you're rooted.

If you have an image from before downloading the update, restore it.

If you don't have a pre-download image, restart your phone. Before it has a chance to restart itself again, go to settings and do a factory reset. Then install a custom ROM.

And once you get it all straightened out, make sure you use root explorer and go to system/etc/security and rename otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak, if it hasn't already been done by the creator of the ROM. That should keep the forced OTA from happening again next time.

Go into clockwork recovery and flush the cache. No need to flash ROM or anything. Just make sure to rename the otacerts.zip file so you don't download the update again.
