Losing data connection since mr2 update
Stock phone. No special firewall nor battery save apps.
A couple of times since the update my phone shows 3 bars of LTE yet all apps lose internet connection and no internet for me.
The apps tell me "no network connection" yet I see 3 bars and 4G LTE in the notification area.
If I restart the phone connects to 3G first....all apps are updated...then the phone goes to 4 G and all is well.
Any easier solution than restarting?Last edited by recDNA; 07-25-2011 at 05:02 PM.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
I haven't been losing 4G permanently, but my data connections have been dropping in and out continuously. I notice very frequent disconnects when using Google Talk, even though I'm in strong signal areas.
I talked to a Verizon rep this morning and he instructed me to turn on Data Roaming in the network settings, and I was able to chat for a while without disconnecting after that. So you might try messing around with that. - 07-21-2011, 12:47 PM

I'll try it. No such thing as "roaming charges" in continental USA right?

I find 3G locks up on me too. Today I was happily cruising the web in 3G when a website froze on me. I tried repeatedly to reload then tried other bookmarks websites but nothing would load even though 3G signal read 4 bars. I shut off the network then turned it back on and it worked. I don't get it but it isn't a good thing.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
The bars mean nothing for your data signal, that's just your cell signal. Data is completely separate and there is no real way to tell how good your data reception really is. Not that you should be having problems but just making sure you were aware of that little tidbit. A factory reset may help if you have the time/inclination to set your phone back up afterwards.

Not in this lifetime! Lol. I would go back and scream for a refurbished phone if I had to do that. No way to check data signal strength with an app or something? I'm not rooted if that matters.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
They will have you try a factory reset before they'll give you a re-furb anyway and no there is no way of measuring data signal strength.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
Have you tried the battery and SIM card pull for at least three minutes to force it to reprovision itself on next power on? After flashing the MR2 RUU, I initially had trouble holding onto a data signal. Once I did the battery/SIM pull, it's been rock solid, even the few times I've been in LTE.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
It's in the lower left under the battery with a metal tab sticking up. Pull the metal tab up and the SIM card will slide out. You can just leave the SIM card in the sliding tray (for at least three minutes), then slide it back in, put battery in and power up.

This process discharges any power left in the phone or SIM and forces it to reprovision itself on the network on power up. (Thanks to Mortiel for the original tip a while back

I was afraid to try anyway because some have reported problems from poorly seated sim cards. If there is a way to insert it wrong you may be sure I would do it.
It's so annoying to suddenly lose network for no reason. I should have learned my lesson from the HTC Windows phone I returned when I bought my Droid 1. You know despite a totally different technology it had most of the same exact problems as this phone! - 07-25-2011, 01:31 PM #19
Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
Sorry it didn't work for you. The SIM card tray simply slides up and down, nothing to it. It should move very easily and lock back into position. Barring something getting on the gold contacts on the back of the SIM (ex. skin oils); it should be making a good connection. If you're still having connectivity issues, I'd try a new SIM card. You should be able to get a new one either at a local Verizon store or by calling them. The last resort is a CLNR.

You misunderstand, there is nothing wrong with my sim card. Others have posted problems with poorly seated sim cards. I just don't wish to chance moving mine since a previous poster has already said it didn't work for him anyway.
My connectivity problems are sporadic so there is no way I could show them to a rep. This also means any attempt to fix the issue will not immediately reveal the success or failure of the endeavor. I find the issue is most common and accute when streaming media. I suspect this may be VZW effort to block illegal tethering. I do not tether but I often listen to radio.com for hours at a time. This may well LOOK like someone hooked up to a computer. I use a LOT of data.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
Ok. But I don't how you're going to rule out the SIM card by not even trying it. There's really very little risk in it. I've pulled mine multiple times without issue. And it DID resolve my issue after flashing the MR2 RUU. I’ve read where it has for others too. It's all about a process of elimination. Until you go through that, you'll never be able to isolate where the problem is in order to get it fixed. Just saying...

Sounds like you're rooted. I'm not. Maybe that is why it worked for you. If you are rooted you are also more of a risk taker than I.
My problem is so sporadic I suspect a software rather than a hardware issue. If the problem becomes.more frequent I will try it.
The fact it didn't work for tex convinced me not worth taking the chance. What you see as easy and risk free really isn't when I've never done it and have broken computer card slots in the past trying to insert a card in them. Sometimes I try to force things when I shouldn't. Other times I don't press hard enough to install something. Sometimes I put things in crooked. A man has to know his limitations.Last edited by recDNA; 07-25-2011 at 02:29 PM.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
Nope, not rooted. I just downloaded the official MR2 RUU (Rom Update Utility) and flashed the phone with it. I then did a factory data reset just to clear the slate, but still had trouble holding onto data. So, after reading the tip on pulling the SIM, I tried it and I've been rock solid ever since.

There's a good example. For me to do.a.factory reset and have to reinstall and configure all my apps is a friggin disaster. For many it's no biggie.

Re: Losing 4G since mr2 update
If you are unwilling to even try simple suggestions posted on here, you probably shouldnt even post your issues on here. Just deal with your phone the way it is or call Verizon. The suggested attempted fix can have absolutely no bad effect on your phone whatsoever. Pulling the battery and SIM card is like the simplest thing to try in the world.
