What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
I know they are having problems - but what are the problems?
Is 4G LTE going to be problematic with ALL future Android OS upgrades?Sent from my iMac using my fingers and bluetooth keyboard. - 07-31-2011, 08:14 AM #2
Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
I don't think it's the os it is the radios htc is using causing problems the charge has leaks of gb which are very stable and it has 4g. Htc is slipping up where they can't get their radios to work sort of like they can't get their chips to have half decent battery life.

I think we will see gb probably not for a few months which by then ics will be out. I think verizon and htc know this is a bad situation and may turn customers off to buying another lte phone from them so hopefully they can get the issues resolved Atleast battery life anyway for their next phone.

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
They fixed the GPS. THANK GOD. My GPS now works GREAT on Thunderbolt.
Getting more battery life would be fantastic. I've gotten used to swapping out my battery half way through the day. I'm not sure they can deliver much in the way of longer battery life with just software changes....ANY increase would be welcome, but I don't think we will see significant increases until the batteries themselves are improved....however, in the mean time, they could just make larger batteries to fit in these already large phones.....and not the extended battery packs - they could be designed into the OM phones better than they are now.Sent from my iMac using my fingers and bluetooth keyboard. - 07-31-2011, 08:58 AM #6

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
OK, I have yet to drop LTE. If there is a way I could show you guys that, I would. I drove from Ft. Lauderdale to Central Florida this week and got LTE for the first hour of my drive. Coming from Sprint Epic, I love LTE for the fact that it doesn't drop by moving 5 feet from where you were. I haven't had any issues with this radio. I'm using the new radio that came with the recent GB leak.

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
Yeah, I know. I drove a 5500 mile big-circle route from Denver to FL, to GA, to SC, NC and across West VA, IN, MO, KS and back with zero issues. I had LTE a very large percentage of that time, acieving speeds up to 30+mbps. But in Denver (one of the original LTE roll-out cities), with tons of hills in the Metro area, it is not unusual to lose a data signal while in a "hole" while driving. If you live in one, you pretty much have to move. Never really had any problem at all with voice signals though, just data. During these periods I was dropping data connection (and so were most others). However, in my case, MR1 and MR2 both made a big improvement on data. I am now satisfied for the long term. Hopefully GB will make it even better.
However, what I'm trying to get across is that it is the communication, negotiation and control of the various radios, (to keep any data connection) that can be an issue. Not simple speed. They are still trying to improve it. I think there are 7/8 radios on the Thunderbolt. The first 4 listed below require constant monitoring by the phone to ensure it is on the optimal radio. The switching back and forth needs to be quick and decisive. In the past it has been less than satisfactory. In all fairness, this has affected all new LTE phones. Not just the Thunderbolt. However, the Thunderbolt has one extra radio than the others. That's why it can do simultaneous voice/data in both 3G and 4G.

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
Well... The first leak does have its bugs. But it isn't an issue with LTE. I would say the biggest problem is with the filesystem. GB with sense is scoring way lower on filesystem benchmarks than Froyo was. Here is my quadrant benchmark for a ROM running based off of the new leak:

I've scored lower as well. Stock froyo scores over 1700.Last edited by Andrew Ruffolo; 07-31-2011 at 10:11 AM. Reason: spelling error

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
All I know is my Thunderbolt is rock solid after the MR2 update, no more reboots, no issues what so ever. So, as far as I'm concerned, I don't need nor want Gingerbread.

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
Let's face it, Verizon is going to be very careful about rolling out GB after all the reboot complaints until MR2 rolled out. Not to mention, no matter what HTC does, Big Red can't help themselves but to get in there and make sure they load up the OS with overpriced craptastic bloatware. No OS will be released until all their stuff will run on it.

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
The most recent gb leak is very stable and has no battery issues. if HTC and vzw weren't screwing around then the masses would also have gb.

Re: What's the deal with 4G LTE and Gingerbread?
my 4G LTE thunderbolt running GB works GREAT!!! love GB oh yea i am rooted by the way. all i can say is take control of your phone and root. SOOOOO many options when you do. dont let verizon control this.
battery is better, runs smoother, customizable rid of bloatware etc.
