Default ??? about phone use in Europe

I am a smartphone newbi so forgive me if my questions sound naive. I've had a TB for several months and the phone and I have come to an understanding about its moods and preferences!

I would like to put information, files, docs, maybe maps for use in Europe. I don't want to use the phone for calls, texts, emails or internet.

What is the best way to put this information on the phone? How do I turn on the phone and have it go staight to airplane mode so it doesn't try to download data ?

I have some of Rick Steves stuff on the phone that I would like to play, but I'm not sure how to access it without the datat turning on.

    Thanks.

On Google Maps, there is a lab extension that allows you to prefetch maps (http://www.androidcentral.com/how-do...ta-google-maps)

Do this for the areas you will be in when you have a data connection, then you can use Google Maps without a data connection.

Also, to save battery, put your phone in Airplane mode while in Europe, that way it won't try to search for cell towers.

Thanks. Do you know if you can use GPS function (Navigator) in airplane mode?
