TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
First day with GB today on the Thunderbolt.
I have the HTC 2750 extended battery.
After 9.5 hours off the charger, my battery is at 50% with light usage, all on WiFi, no calls.
This is unusual -- normally by now, I'm at 70% +- 5%.
Curiously though, according to About Phone -> Battery -> Battery Use, my Dialer has used 20% (!) of the battery usage time, but only with 8s of CPU time and 1m 11s of "keep awake".
I love the new Battery Usage chart -- I can see that it's been stuck on 1x for a good chunk of the day (I have horrible reception in my office.)
Anyone else seeing something similar?Last edited by biogon; 09-29-2011 at 05:37 PM.

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
No I noticed a big difference myself. Battery life has dropped significantly for me.
Im on stock battery and prior to GB update I was lasting the entire day on my normal usage. Now it dies 2 hours before I leave for work. So its barely lasting over half a day. I leave work at 3 by 1 its dying. And it used to last until 10 or later that night. - 09-29-2011, 05:37 PM #4

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
My battery life seems better, just going by today. I have the 2750 battery, I leave 4G on all day, but I manually check for updates on stuff like Mail, or Facebook. Anyway, normally, in 5-6 hours of light-to-medium use, I'm down to about 80-85%. Today, with the same usage, I was only down to 95% after 5-6 hours.
It could just be a coincidence, though, that it came after the GB update. It wouldn't be the first time my phone has seemed to have better-than-usual battery life, coming right off of a fresh charge. I'm interested to see how it does tomorrow, since I won't be charging it tonight (why bother, with 95% still left?). If I can get through my 6 hour shift without dipping into the 70s, percent-wise, I'll start believing that GB helps battery life.
I did this this morning, but I'm curious, what exactly is "assisted dialing", anyway? The settings didn't really make it very clear as to what it is. - 09-29-2011, 05:54 PM #7

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
Follow this guide, minus step 6 (for rooted users) http://forums.androidcentral.com/thu...y-install.html
Assisted dialing is used for international calls while out of the country. You pick up the phone, and an operator will assist you in making a call. Don't know why it's set at default - 09-29-2011, 06:52 PM #9
Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
The dialer is still active, even after disabling. I've had this problem with all 3 of the GB leaks I've installed.

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
I've noticed no difference in battery life, which is disappointing. That is one of the main improvements I was looking for from GB.
I'm at 11:03:51 Up Time, and 02:34:21 Awake time -- with 15% battery life left on my stock battery. It was a lighter than usual day for phone use today, other wise I'd be on my second stock battery by now.Sent from my iMac using my fingers and bluetooth keyboard. - 09-29-2011, 08:38 PM #13

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
I think the dialer is a Gingerbread bug. Basically the dialer keeps running in the background after a call, and the only way to stop it is to reboot the phone. And you guys were all begging for this update

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
I had the same problem, and here is what fixed it for me (I am on a rooted build, so ymmv):
Open the People app (contacts)
Menu -> View
under Options, I unchecked everything except for Google. Granted, I only import contacts from Google, so this was not a problem for me. Ever since then, no dialer issues. - 09-29-2011, 09:29 PM #17
Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
Are you sure?
I set assisted dialing on all the time. I was recently in Mexico, Haiti and Jamaica. Also was aboard a cruise ship supporting VZW signals. Each time I got a *free* text message from VZW telling me how to dial from where I was (GPS is cool!) to the U.S. They were all different (i.e. 001+10digit, 010+10digit, 1+10digit). Maybe I remembered some wrong, but, the point....
I have all my numbers entered into my phone with 10 digits (no leading 1s or +s). I made a call from every place to the U.S. Each time all I had to do was to dial using my "People" app just like I always do in the States, and the phone knew exactly how to dial out of where I was, to the States.
No operator assistance was ever required.

It's not your dream phone.
It's the one after that!©

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
Well that may be an outdated definition, as I will take your real world experience over mine any day. If it's on I assume it automatically assists in adding the required prefix needed to make the call.
In any case if you're not using the phone internationally, there is no need for it to be enabled. Whether or not this has a significant impact on the "dialer drain" is probably not accurate, but any little bit helps! - 09-29-2011, 10:22 PM #19

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
In "limited" testing, I've found my battery life was much better yesterday (first full day on GB) than it had been in the past. I don't use my phone AT ALL during the day (sits in my car, just receives calls/voice mails/texts/whatever), so I am used to getting about 1.5 hours of active use + 9 hours of idle on a charge. Yesterday easily provided the same 9 hours of idle but closer to 3 hours of active use. (For the record, I only use 3G, and my phone has good signal while it sits in the car).
Clearly, YMMV, and everyone has different apps and whatever, but at least for me, it was great that I didn't have to put the phone on the charger until I went to bed.
I wish there was a better battery analyzer that could really pinpoint what was eating my charge.-j

I don't know the state you live in but the weather elements are not good for the phone. I don't suggest keeping it in the car. This is a mini computer. Heat and humidity are not good for phones. Just a friendly suggestion. Also it isn't good for the battery.

Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
I wonder if people who have experienced better battery life accordingly have not used the phone/dialer aspect since a reboot.
I know that yesterday my battery was about 30% when it should be 50% after about 16 hours, and that the Dialer was reported to take up nearly 40% of my battery time.
I have reinstalled PowerTutor and will see whether it will provide useful data. - 10-03-2011, 12:39 AM #25
Re: TB: Poor battery life post-GB (Dialer?)
i do get better battery life than before i can go almost 3 days on extended if i dont dial a thing.. but after making one call it with screw that up..got to be a way to stop the dialer without having to reboot......when the dialer is up under batt. usage and u click on it 5 other things show up i wonder if those are just apps that can access the dialer or ones that are actually running at the moment
