Are there any apps that I can see my voicemail in text form instead of dialing in to listen to? What are people using? Thanks

absolutely.

and you can record personal/individual greetings for specific groups of contacts.

my wife gets one greeting,
my family gets one greeting,
my best friend gets a greeting
and known telemarketers get a special greeting instructing them to go to...find a new job

the email/text notification is great & i can listen to the voicemails in the gmail interface, as well as voice.google.com (or something) to see all of the voicemails laid out and in a nice fashion.

my voicemails are going to the verizon voicemail and not being seen by google voice. I have never had any luck getting this to work for me. It there a certain trick to getting it to work?

Did you dial the activation number?
You should have been assigned a phone number. To active Google Voice, dial:

*71number

Where number is the new phone number you were given.

This will direct unanswered Verizon calls to the new number, where they will leave a message on the new Google number.

Dial *73 to deactivate it.
