Default Looking for an IM app with the following...

Hey TBolters. Hoping someone has a suggestions. Looking for a chat/I'm app that allows for chat/instant messaging on the droid as well as the iPhone. Am also hoping it has pc and mac clients as well. The idea being folks can chat using the same tool regardless of whether they are mobile or on their mac/pc.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

There is such a program...I use it all the time while at work. It is called . The only drawback is that it only works with Google Chrome. I text/chat with people on iPhones and Droids and dumbphones that can text. It is a free program.

You CANNOT do MMS (video/audio/pics) with it and you can view pics coming to you either.

It is still in beta so, they might add that. I have been using the program for about 3 months and love it.

It will also alert you when you are getting a phone call. There is a little delay from the phone to it popping up on your screen....maybe 20 seconds.....but I have no issue with that.

You download the app for free from the Android Market and then download Chrome and the extension and you are good to go.

The beauty of it also is that after you enter your message on the PC and hit send....it actually links to your phone (which can be at home) and puts the message on your phone as if you typed it using your phone. The other party can use whatever program they want to chat with.....in fact, they will never know you are using a program on your PC. My friends have made comments "Wow, you type fast".........LOLOLOLOL

Ok, I'm going a little off course here, but have you tried the Google+ messenger app?

Google+ Messenger (formerly "Huddle") only works on phones, there is no desktop client or browser version as far as I know...but that's really the only drawback I've found. Google+ app is now available on iPhone, so both Android and iPhone users can use it. Unlike the standard Google Talk app, Google+ messenger actually runs in the backgroud on iPhones as well, so those folks will be able to see when there are new messages. It supports group chat with multiple participants and you can send pictures in the chat stream as well, which is a very nice addition.

In the past month or so I've converted many of my friends over to it, and it has been working very well for all of us...Android and iPhone friends alike!

To be honest, it's the closest thing to BlackBerry Messenger I've yet to come across, but with the obvious advantage that you don't need a BlackBerry to use it Oh, also in one-on-one conversations it even shows the read status of messages you send, so you know if the other party has read it yet...even if they haven't responded.

WhatsApp is a great cross-platform messaging app with clients for Android, iOS, and BBOS. Not sure if there are desktop clients though.

It looks like the yahoo pc client only works with yahoo mail... Which I just mothballed, so that stinks. I'm kind of hoping there is a mobile and desktop solution that is not tied to a specific email or browser if that makes any sense. Will check out WhatsApp next.
Thanks for the help so far, all.

Looks like ICQ does this. Web based client as well as iPhone and droid clients. Anyone a current icq user? Impressions? I was shocked my account from like 12 years ago still worked.

My choice is IM+ Pro (they have a free version with ads too) which supports multiple accounts at the same time for AOL, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo! and others. I don't worry about what other users are using as their client because what they run is up to them.

    Trillian.

You can use any service (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk) and it's cross platform everything.

I know several folks that use IM+ for accessing Google Talk on their iPhones. While not as reliable as the dedicated Google app Android users are used to, it apparently is a pretty decent alternative.

Also, as I mentioned on the first page, iPhone does now have Google+ support, so you can use the Google+ messenger with iPhone. I realize that Google+ hasn't exactly taken off yet, and chats started via Google+ app aren't available on the desktop (yet...) -- but it's definitely a great option for chatting amongst Android and iPhone users alike, especially if you want group chat and picture attachment capabilities.

I agree with the other posts, Whatsapp works great. I used it when I still had my BB tour and the wife had the Droid x. I don't use it anymore but she does for her friends.

Thanks for the leads all. I have plenty of research to do. Am looking for something for a small office (10 people) who are all working on different computer and mobile platforms. Trying to stay away from tools that require specific email clients or browsers and etc. Great suggestions. Thanks.

    Whats wrong with Google Talk?
It came on the phone, works great, cross platform, and nothing new to install.

There are at lease 6 different ios clients for it as well.

I'm probably the only droid user who's never used gtalk. It might be the one. Does it require a gmail account?

Yes. Google Talk uses the same account information as Gmail. If you use GTalk on a computer you can chat from within Gmail or a separate GTalk client.
