3G data almost impossible since Gingerbread
I've been having issues with my 3G data ever since my Thunderbolt updated itself to the Gingerbread update. (including both 2.11.605.5 and 2.11.605.9) I always used to leave the Bolt in 3G unless I was actively using data. However, ever since those updates, whenever I try to force it to 3G (using the toggle in Network Settings to CDMA Only), the phone takes FOREVER to get data back-- and almost always goes to 1X.
I have tried the ##778 workaround, setting the Rev. A to "Enabled" instead of eHRPD (and back again); this brings my 3G back [after it restarts] until the NEXT restart, then I have the same problems again. (if I go back into the ##778 menu and toggle it back, 3G works -- so it's not an issue that one works and one doesn't; it just doesn't like to work after the 2nd restart)
Given that I live and work in Los Angeles, and never had any issues with 3G prior to the Gingerbread update, I don't think it has anything to do with the network or signal strength (I am going the same places, at around the same times, etc), and just my phone's radios aren't happy.
If I am in a 4G area it locks into 4G instantly. If I lose 4G, it sometimes loses data entirely, sometimes gets 1X, until I get back into a better 4G signal. It pretty much never finds 3G on its own. The biggest problem is my work's 4G is a little spotty at times so there are times I entirely lose data, or the 4G is flickering on and off. 3G always used to be rock solid so I'd leave my phone on 3G all day unless I needed to go to 4G for a specific purpose. (and sometimes I drive through areas without 4G and it sucks to lose data since I listen to streaming music a lot on the phone)
It's a stock T-bolt, no root or anything.
I am very close to rooting so I can try different radios. The MR2 radios worked the best for me overall, but could I use those with a Gingerbread-based ROM (since MR2 was still Froyo)? If the best option at this point is a factory reset, I might as well root while I'm going through that hassle... :/
Thanks for any advice!
