Hi I am a newbie....
I have a thunderbolt and would like to upload my contacts, pictures etc..to my HP laptop. When I plugged my USB cord from my phone to the HP computer, nothing happened. Please help and remember I am a newbie so make it simple.

well, here's your likely problem:
look at the following 2 possibilities:
1) your phone is automatically set to "charge" when it detects a usb cable inserted. this can be changed by tapping the "disk drive" option that appears on the phone screen when you connect the usb cable from the computer into the phone.
OR
you can change the option to 'disk drive' by doing the following:home screen>menu>settings>connect to PC>default connection type>Disk Drive
and make sure that "ask me" is check-marked to ensure you can toggle easily while connected to the PC.
(**note: you will not be prompted to choose one of those options when you connect the phone to a wall outlet for charging)

2)your computer might not have the correct Drivers to communicate with your phone. just like your printer/fax needs drivers to communicate with the computer, so does your phone. The computer should prompt you within several minutes to install drivers & explore your phone. please let us know if your phone isn't recognized by the computer.

after you change the option to 'disk drive', it may take a few moments for the pc to recognize the phone. if nothing happens, disconnect the cable & re-insert it into the phone. you should hear a 'pop' noise (assuming Windows pc) and "found new hardware...installing new hardware...new hardware is installed & ready to use" bubbles in your task bar @ the bottom of your computer screen.

also, just consider this:
are you signed into the Thunderbolt with a google account?

if yes--your contacts are likely saved in your google account which is accessible via the internet. you can view these contacts by logging into your gmail account at , then clicking "contacts" in the 'Gmail' dropdown above your folder list (inbox, sent, trash).
you can then download the contact list as a .csv file, which can be readable/imported by a laptop.

this is also how you could transfer contacts from an iphone to a gmail account--just reversing steps (save iphone contacts as .csv file, upload to google, sync google account to phone, view contacts on phone).

Make sure you're using the cable that came with the phone. Other cables may be charge only and not have the data connections. I'm using Windows XP yet and have never had to install any drivers. I just plug the phone into the PC, the phone prompts to select a connection mode, I choose Disk Drive, then shortly thereafter, I have two extra drives show up, one for the SDcard, the other for the phone's internal memory I believe. From there you can browse the drives with Windows Explorer and copy/paste as needed.

Edit: you can also use HTC Sync (link below) to sync things on the phone with your PC.

You can use a web browser on your computer to access the content on your phone, and either copy files to your computer or put files on your phone.

This will work to move photos, the contacts are synced with google so you can log into Google email and export contacts and import into outlook or what ever app you are using..

You mean, you want to use a WIRE to move and sync files. Wow, do people still do that? I used to do that with my PDAs back 15 years ago.

It is all through the cloud now. Google has my contacts and Companionlink syncs then to my multiple PCs. Sugarsync takes care of my pictures and documents. I even have a couple of Access databases synced through the cloud. All done automatically. Don't think a thing about it.

I don't long for the 'old ways'.

Ha! I still do it the old way as I don't want anything other than my e-mail stored or transferred through the cloud. Even then, my e-mail is old school too in that it's deleted off the server after Outlook on my desktop pulls it down (via secured SSL POP3). The only catch there is that Gmail puts them in the trash instead of actually deleting them (like many other e-mail providers do), so about once a week I login to Gmail via browser and empty the trash. Also, on my phone I really like to restrict what is syncing to conserve battery life and keep a better handle on what data is going to/from the phone. As such, I only have one Gmail account syncing e-mail only and Beautiful Widgets syncing weather every 3 hours, anything else is manual. Contacts are stored on the phone and backed up to SDcard where periodically they and a few other things (media files, browser bookmarks, and the downloads folder) are copied off to my home NAS (network attached storage). I do the same with things stored on my home PC's. So the process not only allows me to restrict data “in the cloud”, but allows multiple backups across different date ranges. It sounds like a lot of work, but is actually quite simple to setup and manage.
