you can back up apps using astro or similar, but it would not backup user data.

When you sign into your Google account it will automatically set you up. Any apps you have may need to be downloaded again but you wont be charged twice. Not difficult to set up

Hopefully you keep your contacts as Google Contacts instead of Phone Contacts, if so as soon as you log in to your account your contacts will be back. Also for your apps, once the market updates to the new version you can go into "My Apps" (or something like that) and it will list all the apps you've ever used and you can re-download them without having to search for them.

Hopefully your things like contacts and such are on Google or Activesync, and will download when you log in. As for everything else, I would take the time to do a totally fresh start. You may have installed some worthless bloat that you don't need to reinstall on the new one anyway.

If you are rooted, you really can't backup much though. So you need to redownload them from the market and set them up again.

If you don't back up contacts to Google, you can export them to SD card. In the People app, hit menu, Import/Export, and choose Export to SD card. It creates a file called pcsc_pcsc_00001.vcf (it will increment a number if a file already exists) on the root of the SD card. To restore them on the new phone (after you’ve swapped SD cards), hit menu, Import/Export, and choose Import from SD card. I also use the app Bookmark Sort & Backup by happydroid to backup/restore my Internet bookmarks to the SD card (app creates a folder called "BookmarkSB" on the SD card). It also sorts them (I use alphabetically) as the stock bookmarks widget doesn't provide that option.

If you’re interested in backing up stuff off the SD card, connect your phone to your PC via the stock data/charge cable, choose Disk Drive mode and copy/paste as needed. I also use the app OI File Manager by OpenIntents to manage files directly on the SD card as needed.

I backup my entire SD card, via a simple copy, roughly weekly onto my PC, which then gets auto-backed up to one of my servers, which then gets auto-backed up to an external storage device.

I'm never hurting for backups around here

Look here for a [VZW Coverage Map] to check your area. Select 4G before hitting [Refresh]

Lol, I do something similar, back up to a NAS (Network Attached Storage) that has mirrored hard drives (if one fails, the other still has the data). I also periodically burn stuff to DVD that is then kept in a fire safe. I highly prefer this option as it doesn't require an Internet connection and allows full control over my data. Top it off with a recurring reminder in Outlook and it all stays on schedule.
