Typical Data use

Just curious,

WIth the new DATA plan being forced upon us (good or bad), I am curious as to what a typical data usage is per TYPE of app.

For example, I don't strean audio (Pandora, IHeartRadio, TuneIn etc), or Video (Netflix), I do stream Youtube on occassion.

My main use is:

1. Checking Email
2. Facebook
3. Social games (Words with Friends, Draw Something etc)
4, GPS
5. DropBox/Box

I have unlimted text as it stands so that isn't an issue. My main concern is that when I flash to a new ROM and it downloads all the apps (I have since shut that automatic download off).

I have 8 days left on my billing cycle and I am up to 2.5 - 3GB of data use. My son is up to about 1.5GB. That is a typical month.

Does anyone know of the data use per popular apps?.

Also, anyone know of a good app that will auto kill apps that run on their own?

When you say GPS, are you using online maps like Google, or predownloaded maps like CoPilot? That makes a huge difference.

Some apps, like Sugarsync, can be set to only auto sync when connected to WiFi. More apps need that feature.

I mainly use GPS for either GeoCaching or when I go running and I use Sporty Pal.

On occassion I will use it to find my way to a location.

When I do go GeoCaching and I find a Cache, I will use the program to log my find which uses data, but not much I would think.

There's a app you can install that will tell you how much data each app you have uses. I forget it's name. Something like traffic monitor or data monitor

since I still have unlimited data, I am going to try to test out how much data would be used on netflix for a typical 30 minute sitcom. I'm very curious to see how much data that would use, because I used to run netflix from my phone at least an hour a day, during breaks and lunch at work, but this was before Darth Verizon decided to smite my unlimited data! I will post my findings ASAP on this.

well, just got back from lunch, and a 21:30 min episode of raising hope used up 106 mb of data. not as bad as I thought it would be, but if you only have 10GB to share among 3-4 people, that could be eaten up quickly.

It depends on the source, but anywhere from 300mb per hour for low definition to 2GB per hour for a HD video. Some devices offer hd netflix which is around 2gb per hour. Something to consider in case you wish to upgrade your phone.

my test did conclude ONE thing for me: netflix will not be downloaded onto my next phone when I buy my subsidized phone.

Netflix is the least of my problems. I only watched it on my phone so much because I have unlimited data, and I got hooked on "24". watched it every free moment I had for about six weeks. in line at walmart, post office, doctors office, dentist chair, you get the idea. however, my plan is to buy a dual core phone that is NOT the newest thing going (probably the SIII) and root it as soon as I get a chance.

Streaming NFL games (when stuck at work) was always my biggest data hog; otherwise Netflix was just an occasional thing. In fact, since doing a factory reset a few months ago, I haven't re-installed any of those apps yet. Even if they were installed, it's up to each one of us as to how much to use them. So ultimately, we're in the driver's seat as to how much data we may use. If anything, my phone is a convenience not a necessity. I'd much rather use a PC or large screen TV when given the chance. Even then, we still limit that as we'd rather be out doing something than being a couch potato.

Oh and as to rooting, I normally wouldn't even consider it, but I'm gonna keep it in my back pocket if upcoming ICS screws up the phone or I don't like Sense 3.6. I'll use trter10-2’s All In One Tool to root and flash the last Gingerbread RUU I saved (root is required to go back to older software than what's on the phone).

I'm definately worried about the ICS update. I'm to the point where I could really do without it. if you look across the landscape, you will see several people who actually like the new tiered plans...but for the most part, i would say 3/4 people don't like it. it's the reality that ALL of the carriers are going to try to make as much money off us as they can. they have no obligation or inclination to make is easy or convienient for us. I will enjoy my unlimited data for the next 13 months, then it's decision time: buy my next phone for full price, keep my Tbolt, or learn how to curtail my data usage. I'm already weaning myself off of it, and I still have a whole year left. I doubt I will keep my Tbolt, it's already quite the dinosaur in the world of 4G smartphones. it's a GOOD dinosaur, but.....

Traffic Monitor Plus by RadioOpt. I started using it after the plan change announcement so I could get a better idea of how much data I'm using on wifi as well as the cell network. I'm on wifi a lot now, but that won't always be the case. So this will give me a more accurate picture of my total data consumption.

You can always find a phone on eBay. I can't give up my plan. I would rather buy a phone on eBay. I use Pandora a lot. My new internet for my laptop is the jetpack and I use for tablet too. I have the 5g plan. I use very close to it. My phone use is well over what would be on new plan combining the 3. It is not an option for me.
