What will the Thunderbolt be unable to do?
There's been so much discussion of the Thunderbolt being underpowered, not dual-core, just another Evo, etc. but I'm wondering what actually the Thunderbolt will be underpowered for? I don't steam 1080p video to and from my phone, I don't play many, if any games. Sure, a gig of RAM would have been great, but will 768 really hold it back? I guess I'm struggling with what a modern smartphone can't do. What will the Atrix be able to do better than the Thunderbolt. Something, surely, but if it's just gaming, does that matter for most of us?
Edit: I should add, battery life could be well what it's unable to do. - 02-07-2011, 09:47 PM #2
The Thunderbolt will be able to do everything the Bionic can. The Bionic may be able to play a few more games smoother, but that's it. And the TB may have a better camera. And is built alot better. Plus im hearing Battery life on the TB may be better. Vzw may be releasing the better phone first.

It will be unable to print money. Very unfortunate.

We all also have to keep in mind the software BOTH phones are running has not been optimized for full multi-core support. Both phones are shipping with Froyo, and not even Gingerbread fully supports multi-cores...at least not enough to take full advantage of them.

It wont multitask like WebOS, it wont be able to connect to the "superior" Apple App Store (*cough* who cares *cough*), it doesn't sync with your xbox live profile to display your awesome achievements, it wont auto level your World of Warcraft character, it wont be NFC compliant, it wont drive you to work, and swimming with it in your pocket is still strongly discouraged.

Fine. Then it wont make a good Starcraft II 2v2 partner.

It doesn't have HDMI, but it's DLNA compatible, so that doesn't really affect me. The battery might not be so hot, but that remains to be seen. Not really a HUGE deal, but the AC port is on the same long edge that the phone will rest on when the kickstand is in use. So that means I cant plug it in at my desk while watching TV shows. I understand not placing it on the bottom, since it can prop in portrait as well, but they should have put it on the right side, if anything.

you got to look at the way that dual core went with the PC... you need both an OS and apps that use it to take full advantage of the hardware, there are still lots of apps for PC that still don't utilize multi core processors... even if google implemented support tomorrow your phone still couldn't fully leverage the power till developers start using the API that leverage that power... my guess is we are a year from seeing the true power of dual core phones.

I'm really hoping the the 2nd Gen snapdragon, which uses the more efficient 45nm core, will help with battery life. It kind of scares me that the Bolt has a larger screen than the Fascinate, plus the 4G radio, but it has a smaller battery (1400mAh vs. 1500 on the Fascinate). And the Fascinate's battery life already isn't exactly impressive, IMO.

The TB won't be able to serve me coffee, make me a sammich, or wipe my backside.

It's all about optimization, really. Is SLCD more energy efficient than AMOLED? Is the 2nd gen SDP really that much more energy efficient?
I'm sure like most smartphones with this kind of power, it'll make it a work day without charging but you'll have to plug it in when you get home.
