I don't understand why 4G isn't on by default...

I was in a 4G area today and it didn't lose the signal at all. However, at home, I'm in an expanded 4G area rather than a 4G area which means the tower is a little bit down the road. I tend to stay on 3G 97% of the time with the occasional 4G signal appearing at times. But that's only half of it. When I dial *#*#4636#*#* and change it to search for 4G only, my 4G signal is full bars and it can constantly keep the 4G signal.

Why does this happen? If I'm able to keep a full 4G signal in an expanded area when 4G mode is set than why does it continue to stay at 3G with the occasional bump to 4G on the dual band mode? I really don't want to change the mode to LTE only because I do travel to 3G areas a lot.

Any help is appreciated.
