I tried transferring a file between 2 laptops through the Thunderbolt's hotspot feature and noticed my transfer rate was only ~700 KB/s. That's when I noticed that both the laptops are only using 802.11g. Doesn't the Thunderbolt support 802.11n?

Both laptops support 802.11n and when connected through my 802.11n router, I get transfer rates between 4-9 MB/s.

Anyone here able to create an 802.11n hotspot? Is there a setting?

I connected my Thunderbolt to my D-Link DIR-655 802.11n router. Both the router and phone showed a link speed of only 65 Mbps (not much better than 802.11g). That could mean that the Thunderbolt only supports 1 antenna and 20 MHz bandwidth for 802.11n. By contrast, my laptop showed a link speed of 300 Mbps (2 antennas and 40 MHz bandwidth).

I used the File Expert app to create an FTP server on the phone and transferred a file to it. I got 2.0-2.5 MBps transfer rates. Pretty much the same as 802.11g.

I wonder what's causing the slow computer to computer transfer rates through the hotspot feature. Maybe the phone isn't powerful enough to handle that kind of routing. It would have been nice to create temporary LANs while traveling to share both the internet and local files. At this speed I'll just go with using a USB flash drive for sharing files.
