Error Service Unavailable message in my software update

This may be a silly question (I am not super technical) but I went to my settings / software update and clicked forthe phone to look for and do any software updates and I received the following message:

Error, service Unavailable
Check for software update under settings when service is avaialble[/I]

Can some one please tell me what this means and how do I set the phone to receive any updates? I am waiting for HTC to fix the exhange 2010 calendar sync issue and want to make sure when they do that I receive the notification and patch! I am lost without my calendar.....

there are no updates available yet, so a server is not set up to push out updates.

everyone will see the same error.

Not true at all. I checked my phone for updates at least a few times since receiving it and have always had a "no new software update available" message. I also just checked it while typing this reply and have the same message.

They more then likely use the same servers as all the other phones use to check for updates.

I got "no new software update available." I wonder if they are prepping for an update if some of you guys had an error message.

You get "error service unavailable" when the connection to the server has been dropped, ie no 3/4g

"No new software update available" when the connection has been made, but there isn't an update.

I thought I'd restart this thread now that the official OTA update is out. I posted this in another thread (sorry) but I figured it may get lost in the mix there and should have its own thread to hopefully figure out whats going on and how to fix the issue...

I'm in Los Angeles. Not that location matters from what I've read on these updates...

But mine says:

Error

SERVICE UNAVAILABLE
Check for Software Update under
Settings when service is available

My update screen has said this for weeks now. It used to say "No update available..." when I first got the phone but now it just says the above message when I try to manually update. Anyone know what's up with this message?

This would make sense but I have a pretty good (3 bars) 4G connection here in my house in Los Angeles. Any ideas now that there actually is an update rolling out today?

I too am in the LA area. On 4G I've gotten that error for weeks including today. I disabled 4G, and on 3G the update was available and updated successfully.

I'm in the Valley and have tried both 3g and 4g and get the SERVICE UNAVAILABLE message on both...

I finally got past the error service unavailable, so now im downloading update. down side is that i had to switch to 1x data to get it to work, so the download is going to take a long time.

using phone info app i selected (CDMA only) not LTE and not CDMA auto prl.

Okay I did this and after trying twice while it says 1x data, the error message went away and the update showed up. Trying the CDMA auto prl and LTE/CDMA, etc. options did not work but CDMA only did seem to work. The update is now downloading SLOOOOWWWLY. At this pace I'll have the update by tomorrow afternoon.

Oh well, at least its coming.

On the downside, I'm still bothered by why I have to do this to get the update to come through on my phone when others don't.

ok, i got to about 60% at 1X speed then download failed and i just wasted over an hour of my life.

When I check for the update, I get the "checking for update" box and then a blank page. Tried in 3g and 4g. Nada.

I'm in the san fernando valley and getting the same message don't want top switch and wait all day on 1x while I'm working.I'm guessing wifi wouldn't work either

Mods, apologies in advance if this violates a forum rule.

I had been trying to update for the better part of an hour, until I read the above posts.

Using I switched to CDMA only (Not CDMA auto (PRL) as in the instructions) and received the update screen the very first time I asked for it to check. (note - I did try the CDMA auto (PRL) first and received the same error messages.

Therefore, if you are getting the error, it appears that it's not because the file is somehow unavailable in your area, rather it's an issue with the 3g/4g connections.
