On page 221 of the user guide, it says it is possible to tether you device via usb cable. However, I called Verizon and they said they charge a tethering fee.

I thought that's only for mobile hotspot?

Do they really charge a fee?

It's true, VZW charges a monthly fee to tether, via cable or WiFi.

1. You can root and tether for free.
2. You can buy a tethering app from the app store, without root access, and pay a one time fee for the app.
3. You can pay VZW the monthly fee and tether.

Keep in mind that tethering without a plan is against your Terms Of Service with VZW.

Having said that I don't know anyone who's been caught tethering and charged by VZW. It can happen and they can cancel your service.

I used to tether using an app I got called Tether, on my Blackberry. It worked great and I didn't use it much, about 2GB a month.

The mobile hotspot is a different feature of the device that lets your device act as a WiFi hotspot for other devices to use.

There's also a charge for that after May 15.

But even though there is, I do it already on my Droid X.

This is because it doesn't change the APN, which mobile hotspot does.

Does the usb tethering feature?

If it doesn't, they can't tell, unlike mobile hotspot.

Also, do you get unlimited data with the mobile hotspot feature on a lte phone?

I know you do on a 3g phone...
